Lots of info on converting from CNG to propane on a MKI on the fourum, very helpful. Where is the best place to have the thru-hull for the vent? Stern or side? I looking at MKII's around my marina they all seem to be on the stern quarter, but that seems to me to be a place that could be underwater when heeled?

David-
We have MKII. I believe the propane locker vent line connects with via a T fitting to the cockpit port scupper drain line which exits in the transom. I replaced both transom thru hulls as the nylon had deteriorated from the sun. On our boat, I think the port thru hull fitting was slightly larger than the starboard fitting.

Paul, I found out the hardway that those thru hulls were not the same size. I bought two of the same size, and I had planned to replace both, bit it did not fit.

Ah! Hadn't thought of that. Will have to check out if that can work for me. Thanks!

We converted our former C36MkI from CNG to propane a couple of years ago (using a modified locker that I bought from a member who was parting out his hurricane-wrecked C36Mk1.5). We only did so because it became virtually impossible to get CNG refills; it was no small job to do this, as we had to replace a perfectly-working (albeit old) stove, run new gas lines, install a propane leak detector, a remote solenoid switch, and -- most difficultly -- figure out how to put a propane locker into the lazarette.
I would definitely suggest venting out the transom. Remember, the vent line has to slope DOWNWARD from the bottom of the propane locker at all points of sail; given the dimensions, it was hard enough to accomplish this venting out the stern. I can't see how one would achieve that outcome if it was set up to vent out one of the sides.
We did not quite achieve all the ABYC guidelines (i.e., the locker door can't be reached without opening the lazarette), but I think we came pretty close.
I would definitely think that T-ing the vent line into a scupper line or other drain hose would not meet the guidelines -- the vent line should have its own through-hull so that any leaks can only travel one way (and not back up into the boat). Installing a small mushroom through-hull in the transom is the least of the difficulties of this conversion!

David,
I too am upgrading a 1985 MK1 hull#440 to propane. I chose to build my own locker to fit. I also chose to use 5lb tanks which will likely supply adequate fuel for our weekend trips on the Chesapeake. Definitely vent thru the transom (1/2" ID hose) and definitely replace the supply hose and add sensors tied to the remote solenoid switch. One sensor in the locker and one in the bilge. I've attached a build picture of the locker and will follow up with pix of the install. I plan to add a 6” round deck inspection hatch to the lid to all easier access to tank valve without unclamping the lid only time I want to open the locker is to grab tanks for refills.
locker dimensions 21.5 x 12 x 13h
3/8 okume plywood (left over from cabin floor project)
epoxy and silicone to pass the bucket test
drsin under false floor false floor holds tanks in place

Hi Paul,
It looks nice. I did notice wire nuts on solenoid leads, when installed they must be crimped and and sealed.
