Hello 36'ers
We have just returned from doing the Newport to Ensenada race. We took 4 th place out of 13 boats. another Cat 36 named Tara won our Cruising Class Spinnaker A.
On the delivery back north from Ensenada to San Diego the engine started to get up around 200 degrees in the 10th hour of the delivery. No biggie. there was wind so we sailed the last hour into SD bay.
On the delivery from SD to Catalina Island I was sleeping and about 0630 the watch came and woke me up saying that the engine was making funny noises and they think they ran over a kelp patty and its laboring making different noises. It was a little off so I had them shut the motor down and checked oil, belt, etc and it all looked great.
I put the cover back on and fired it up and sounded normal.
The call came out, no water out the tail pipe Captain! RUH ROH!
I pulled the cover up and had them fire it up. from out the right side of the exhaust pipe come all kinds of water that should have been going out the back. Great I thought, we are 20 miles out to sea off San Clemente and we have a busted exhaust system.
Luckily I have stainless steel wire and the clamping tool you can buy at the boat show. I fashioned two large clamps to hold the pieces together and we were able to make the delivery bcak to Channel Islands Harbor. We got to slip and just then it started puking water out from under the engine cover. No Worries we're home!!
I chose to order the pipe and insulation from Catalina Direct. For a couple reasons. #1 the fit and finish of their products are great #2 I have a hard time putting iron pipe in a place where sea water lives every day.
One other thing. The soot from the diesel exhaust was eveywhere! I spent about 5 hours on sunday with simple green and two rolls paper towels cleaning the insides of the engine compartment.
Check out the pics of the broken pipe
