Hurth gear R and R

My gear is grumbling in reverse,result of a high rev forward to reverse shift.  It's really been a good albeit undersized unit considering all the bad shifts from students over the years.  Anyway I need to remove it and replace it.  I have the 25 hp universal    How hard is it? Anyone done it?Advice?thx guys

I pulled mine not to bad of a job. Best place to have it over hauled is Harbor Marine in Everett Wa. At the same time I replace the motor mounts

Anyone have any specific advice on how to remove the gear?? I don't see any way to unbolt it from the engine block?

That is one problem with the 50,you have to take the bell housing off to get to the bolts for the transmission. That means the back engine mounts will be off so block up the engine

Yes but first i need to remove it...looks like i need to remove the heat xchanger,then remove topnut on all four motor mounts,support the  engine block somehow,then remove bolts from bell housing? do i have to lift the block or remove the exhaust riser or hump hose? what a stupid design..more suggestions?

This is a good time to take the heat exchanger in and have it gone thru, you do have to do most of the things you ask abouts since you have to take the bell housing off. Good time to check out your engine mounts since the engine will be off of them. Make sure you put a new damper plate in. The PO had a shop do his work and they put in a new transmission and did not replace the damper plate ,lasted about 300 hours. You are right about stupid design you would think they would bolt on like the 100 . some stupid engineer

I finally got the bell housing off. I am tall and don't fit well in small spaces but after 6 hours of focused cursing I separated the bell from the engine then another long while trying to get it thru the space between the shaft flange and rear bunk crossmember   I emerged sweaty, exhausted but successful   Now while waiting for new damper plate I will clean and paint the heat exchanger and housing.  I would starve if I had to make a living as a mechanic.
