How to actually remove the microwave?

Hi there -

I never use my microwave, and am considering taking it out to allow for more storage of galley items in its place.  It is in the usual spot just behind the gas range/oven.

I thought it would easily pull out, but the lower and upper lips of the shelves prevent that - the microwave is about 1/2 an inch taller than the opening.  I am not sure how the previous owner got it in there, but I am assuming there is a trick to it that I am missing.  Is there an easy way to remove those shelf lips?  I am not sure how to proceed and would rather not have to do a lot of cutting in order to get this thing removed.

Thanks!

Hi Tom,

I'm in the opposite position.  Trying to figure out how best to secure my new microwave.  I decided to put it in the other "usual spot", at the end of the counter under the cockpit, adjacent the steps.

I decided not to put it where yours is because I didn't want to have to find all the shelf "lip" screws under the teak bungs and then have to put new bungs, sand & revarnish the whole thing.  I presume that's what you'll have to do.

Paul - thanks!  I believe you are correct, I will need to do some drilling out (will probably work on it this winter!)

I have also had a lot of luck securing items with carpet padding - the rubber stuff you can get at Home Depot - it does an excellent job keeping coolers and other heavy objects in place on the counterops or floor - you may just want to try that!

Paul,

On our 1987 we have the microwave under the cockpit next t the steps.  We use non-skid shelf mats to keep the microwave in place.  It's the rubberized grid like material, here's a link to Amazon =>http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&redirect=true&ref_=sr_hi_2&keywords=non%20slip%20shelf&bbn=1055398&qid=1287501818&rh=n%3A1055398%2Ck%3Anon%20slip%20shelf

We use this to keep things in place on the shelves in the cabinets as well.  The microwave has remained stationary even when sailing rail down on a starboard tack.  The weight of the microwave helps keep in place on the non skid mat.

I hope this helps.
