Changing fuel filters

We are planning to change our fuel filters ourselves on our 1998 C36 MKII with the Universal 35MBC engine. Some instructions say you need to bleed air after changing the filters, and some instructions say you do not. Total confusion! Is it necessary to bleed the fuel lines or not?[/FONT]

No bleeding is necessary, you will have to 'pump' the racor to fill it up

WADR, pumping the Racor will mess up your fingers, big time. That's what the electric fuel pump is for. On your M35, your fuel pump will ONLY work in either of two cases: 1) when the glow plugs are engaged; 2) when the engine starts and the oil pressure is "made."

What I do is fill the new primary filter with injector cleaner - easier and less smelly than diesel.

The secondary filter usually requires that the nut on top of the housing be removed to get all that air out of that low spot on my M25, but perhaps not on your M35.

Your M35 is "self bleeding," meaning that you don't have to operate the knurled knob on the injector pump housing.

In order to get the fuel pump to operate without holding the glow plugs on or running the engine (since it can't start unless it's bled, right?,, try this:

PS - I also recommend only doing ONE filter at a time and starting the engine. Any time you have two things to do, always ONLY do one at a time, 'cuz if you do both, and something doesn't work, you won't know which thing got messed up.

What I do when I change the both filters is to fill them with deisel before I put them back on. The engine is self primimg so you do not need to bleed it, but you need patience in starting it.
