I have some questions. I have read and seen most of the posts here at the Cat 36 site. I have a few questions and wondering if anyone has pictures of what they saw/did.
Has anyone had the opportunity to take the counter off the top and look down from the top to see the relationship to the icebox and boat?
Has anyone perhaps cut the panel between the stove and the icebox and viewed the setup from that point?
I have included a copy of the Catalina DWG showing the installation. Looking at it raised some questions. I replaced the AB with same a little over a year ago and don't have any big issues but would like to improve the inefficiency.
Of course the box itself gets a good deal of attention and to every forum out there appears as the largest nemesis. Air exchange with the compressor would be another. Looking at this diagram it would appear that the evaporator plate towards the aft could have a little more attention, considering its proximity to the engine compartment and exhaust.
I can see this area gets pretty tight considering the hull form etc. and not very easy to insulate. When I get to the boat this spring I am going to look into this aft area a bit closer, but would enjoy seeing or hearing of anyone's experience, particularly pictures showing some of the details of assembly

Randy Sherman had the counter top off, I am sure there are pictures here somewhere of that but haven't yet found them. His user name here was MutualFun, might do a search and see what you find, I think his boat is a 1990 as well. He's probably in the Bahamas right now.
I found this post:

in which he comments that taking the counter top off doesn't help.
Edit:
Just read the PDF, they show the compressor unit and it is marked "Fan facing forward". On our Mk II the fan faces rearward, I'm pretty sure it's the original factory install.
Thanks Bud I will see if I can get hold of Randy he and I are 1 hull apart.

Bud. My fan also faces aft. Not sure why the difference. I know I wish it faced forward, as you have to be careful not to stuff something in there and block the airflow, and all of the electrical connections are on the other side and nearly impossible to get to. I had to unbolt the whole unit and turn it to check the fuse and connections a couple years ago. Not a lot of fun. Wonder why they were installed that way?

Bud and Gary, The fan originally and my replacement are mounted so the fan portion of the assembly is toward the bow but the fan blows toward the aft drawing air originally from the clearance that was left between the fan and bulkhead. You can see in the pdf that they put a vent in the bulkhead, like many early owners did, I did do that on mine and I am actually thinking of adding a duct right to the fan from the vent.
