cutlass bearing and shaft

Installed new cutlass bearing about 100 hours ago. There is some chatter
as various rpm's but not too bad, the cutlass bearing seems to be
worn. Is a new shaft needed, this boat is a 1999 36MKII with 2400 hrs
total on the engine and shaft. Does the rudder need to be removed
to pull the shaft. What is involved to remove the rudder? Last time
the cutlass was removed the shaft would not clear the rudder, the
bearing was removed with shaft in place.
Thanks, Jack

I recently had the same problem. I asked a mechanic to look at it. When the stuffing box was removed it was apparent that the shaft needed to be replaced because the brass was worn down. Although other mechanics in the yard were talking about the difficulty of changing the bearing and removing the shaft on a Catalina my mechanic had a special tool for changing the bearing and also managed to remove and replace the shaft by pushing the rudder to the side- it took time but success. But just because the bearing needs changing doesn't nec mean you need to change the shaft.

About how many engine hours can be expected before the cutlass bearing needs changing? (I get a singing noise from around that area when the engine runs at about 1200 rpm's -- but only when the boat is moving. If I run it at that speed, in gear, with the boat tied up I don't get any noise.)

I had both the cutlass bearing and strut replaced before going to Mexico. After the work was completed I had a singing noise at about 1100 RPM when motoring but no sound when running the engine at the same RPM at the dock. I resolved the issue by removing the prop, having it rebalanced and the blades re-pitched. I have not had a problem since and have done over 180 hours.
