This is likely a dumb question re: my C36 MI
In the aft birth there is a box shape mounted to the overhead that is adjacent the forward portside, just aft of the galley bulkhead. It has a vinyl cushioned cover that snaps onto it. I can't figure out what it is?

On my 85 MK1 it is the underside of the L shaped galley counter at same elevation as the cooler top. Not sure why they designed it this way rather than raising the counter for this section a few inches to give more room in the aft sleeping compartment.

Thanks Gary, I was right it was a dump question. I was looking at the interior of the birth independent of the galley. When I looked at it this morning, your explanation made sense, although the configuration doesn't make much sense. At least the mystery is cleared up!

That's what it is on our Mark II as well. On ours it is very nice teak. I guess they covered it to lessen the whack factor when struck by body parts.
