C36 passenger limit

Does anyone know the US coast guard passenger limit on a C36?

I am not aware of a placarded or other regulatory legal limit. I suggest you check with Catalina if no one here can offer an authoritative answer.

The boat is not required to have a capacity plate. Absent the plate, the controlling factor would be the formula...

Length x Width
15

Length 36 x Width 11 divided by 15 = 26.4 pax.

That's some 5,600 lbs of people. While I am confident the boat could carry them, I think the problem would be the capacity of the holding tank. On the other hand, in a good breeze, having all that rail meat to windward would make the boat quite stiff.

I have carried as many as 11 on Caprice for the Annual Fleet
Review at our Yacht Club. I carry 8 PFD's so some have to bring their own PFD's. When they all line up on the starboard side to pass in review and salute the Bridge Officers, Caprice heals about 5 degrees.

The capacity question was on the US Coast Guard test...

36 x 11 / 15 = 26.4
which equates to 26 x 150 lb passengers.

26 x 150 = 3900 lbs

Because there are so many overloaded boats coming from Cuba I think the USCG had to develop this equation...
or maybe if your boat is used in a rescue

150 pounders, I guess it was an all girl crew, 26 of them on the rail, you would not need to reef until the wind hit about 60.

I find on my 36 MarkI, 6 is comfortable in the cockpit or cabin, more than that gets a bit cramped. Now if they were all 150 pound girls in bikini's I could probably put up with a few more.

The last time I saw 150 lbs on the readout of my bathroom scale was the last time I could see the scale at all. And that was decades ago. I noticed at lunch today that I could still fit easily into the bench seat in a booth at Carl's Jr, though, so I could not have gained that much over the years.

Larry you are safe on my boat I am sure. Using the max load of 3900LBS and my six person limit, I can have 6 650 pounders aboard.

It is odd that the formula uses 150lbs as a passenger average. For aircraft weight and balance a number of 170 is used and that is felt to be low for our abundant society.
