I have scanned the 36 website for an answer to no avail, so I guess I will ask here in the forum this question: What is the fix for a Maxwell windlass that is slipping? It has operated perfectly for years and now it wants to slip when I put a load on it. Any ideas?

I don't know what model you have, but it sure sounds like the clutch is slipping. I have a VW1500 like in the attached pic. If you look at the top, just above the rope drum, there are slots in the top ring. You insert a bar in there and tighten/loosen the clutch as needed. I have mine set so that it will slip only under a very high load, but normally pulls the anchor out of the Chesapeake mud and up into place without slipping. The clutch can also be released to launch the anchor, if you have a self launching bow roller (I don't).
The manual for your winch should be on Maxwell's website, that might help you find the answer.

Gary, I was aboard my boat today and I have a Maxwell 800 and I do not have the two slots that you were alluding to. Does anyone else have any ideas of how I could rectify the problem of it slipping? Thanks in advance.

I assume that's a Freedom 800 winch. I found the manual at http://www.maxwellmarine.com/support_manuals.php(link is external) Tried to attach it, but it's too big for the forum limit
According to the manual, you adjust the clutch by inserting a winch handle into the winch socket in the center of the drum. See 'Free falling the anchor' and 'Raising the anchor manually' on page 26.
Also, found this thread while doing a google search for the manual

I think I have the same model as you on my 1999 boat. I am continually adjusting the pressure with the winch on the top of the windlass. We have the rope/chain gypsy model and I have to have a different tension for rope, chain and pulling the rope/chain splice through the gypsy.
I boat in fresh water and have not had to service the windlass yet. I think in salt water you must service it at least yearly.

I had a slipping issue with my Maxwell 800...called them in Southern California...guy told me to grease the clutch cone, which I did and all was well...I think the manual says to grease it yearly. Of course with the 800 you adjust tension with a winch handle on the top of the capstan.
Hope this helps
