Wear Items while hauled out

Hi Friends,

We will be hauling Pelican out this January for bottom paint and blister repair. While our baby is in the yard, I want to inspect the cutlass bearing and rudder post bushing for wear. I searched the archives without much luck, so maybe your collective knowledge can help. How much shaft movement is too much in the cutlass bearing? With regard to the rudder post bushing, how much movement at the rudder tip is too much? One more question. I have the 3" exhaust heat exchanger. During endless 2500 RPM motoring, I have a bit of steam that comes out of the exhaust along with tons of cooling water. How much steam (if any) is normal? We sail in Southern California year round, and I see the steam often. Thank you all in advance.

Cheers,
Paul O

Paul;
I can offer some opinions, however if you feel the situation warrants, you should seek the advice of a professional as it is hard to make any judgement without actually seeing the boat. (Basic disclaimer)
How much shaft movement is too much in the cutlass bearing? There should be no (side to side or up-down) movement of the shaft as it sits in the cutlass bearing. Since the boat is out of the water, why not replace it and you will not have to think about it again ? Typical prices for a pro to to this job should be about $250.00 including parts. If you decide to do it yourself, you need; Morse Bearing; model 'BLACKFISH'  1X1.1.25 X4
Find Morse  Rubber LLC here on the web. Tools to do the job may be available to members of the Assn.

I have a bit of steam that comes out of the exhaust along with tons of cooling water. As your exhaust heats up after hours hours of motoring - a little steam will be normal. If you are concerned about overheating and not keeping an constant eye on the temp gauge - install a 'Borel Water Alarm'. It will be $100.00 well spent.
Rudder wobble; Hard to say without seeing the boat- but there should not be much. I'll let others try that one.
Hope that helps.
Bill

Paul - If you are dropping the mast it would be a great time to inspect or replace the masthead sheeves.
Steam - yes we get the steam after long motoring days - not a lot - but we are on Lake Huron so things
are a little cooler.  The monitor Bill mentioned - just went on the Spring Launch to-do list!

Hi Kids,

Thanks Harold. The mast is going to remain aloft this year. Good advice about the sheeves and mast head harware. I have a full enough plate this year. So it goes forward to the "soon future" list.

Cheers,

Hi Paul

Two winters ago, We did a full refit of our 1991 C36 mast & boom. Including all the electrical cables, sheaves, halyards, stainless steel parts, painting, etc...
Quite a rewarding work when you see the results.

Good luck!

PD, we did a full pdf document of the work done, including pictures and materials used. But it is in Spanish..

Would be great if you shared that document -- some of us are bilingual and would be interested in having it for future reference!

Eladio:  If you email the PDF to me I will try to get it loaded to the Tech section of the site if you like.  Might try my hand
at translating too if that's ok with you.

Hi Kids!

Pelican and her beautiful big shiny bottom are back in the water. We had a successful visit to the boat yard. Thank you all for your advice and sharing your knowledge. The cutlass bearing was replaced. A new propellor was fitted due to age and corrosion. Many gelcoat blisters were repaired. Sanding and bottom paint applied. We did not do any mast work. Maybe next time. Thanks again everyone.

Cheers,
PO
