water in fridge?

The past year I've had quite a bit of water appearing in the fridge on my 1989 Catalina. Does anyone have any idea where it's coming from? I pump it out but a few weeks later it just seems to reappear. She's on a mooring in CA. Not a lot of rain but here but we do have many foggy days. Thanks for any help here!! David

How about an automated signature, so that we know which year/model we're discussing? Just click User CP upper left corner of this page and set one up. It's easy to do. You can use my automated signature below as a guide for what kind of info to include.

David,

My 1999 model has a drain hole in the bottom of the fridge connected via hose to a foot actuated pump. There is also a ball valve in the hose before the connection to the sink drain.

If I leave the ball valve open, water leaks in backwards thru the hose/pump, so I keep it closed until we need to pump.

This is due to semi clogged sink drain hose. When the sink becomes full of water then it will go back to the refrigerator. Open the valve a the bottom of the sink drain hose and use a plunger to open any clogs. It worked for me.

Larry.. thanks for the head's up! I'm Jackson Hole, WY for till mid September and all my info is on my boat. A friend checking on it called me and mentioned that the fridge had water. It's happened before. I did get some good answers and when I get back I'll give them a try. Next time I post I'll set up my signature page. Thanks again.. David

David yes there are some good idea here but one thing I did not see is if you have a foot pump to empty the fridge out. If you do then you should have a check valve after the pump which as gotten something in the rubber flap in the check valve and will not seat. Thus letting water come up into your fridge. The box under the stove needs to come out to access it. We cruised 10 months last year and had it happen a few times. Takes ablyt 30 min to solve the trouble. The valve comes apart by 4 screws. Good luck.

David,

Everything others have said will help with water in the fridge but the problem is that there is always some food or packaging that gets in the pump and plugs it up.
Do what Randy, said but spend a few minutes to install a water strainer.

That will keep food out of your pump and once a season, clean it out.

If you boat in winter freeze country, don't forget to add a little RV antifreeze to your fridge.

I think a number 4 cork, pushed in the drain from inside the fridge, should prevent back flow water from entering the fridge, leaving the foot pump assembly in tact should you ever need to use the foot pump later.

I replumbed my drain into the top the cross over tube between the 2 sinks so no water can get back into the frig

Since my foot pump no longer works and I rarely use ice, I disconnected the drain hose from the fridge. Any fridge water goes directly to the bilge. After eventually figuring out why I was getting a lot of water in the bilge I plugged and clamped the loose end of the drain hose and no more water. Lake water was back flowing through the sink drain hose into the disconnected hose and into my boat. Not good.

I had water coming in my fridge. I believe it occurs when I was heeled over and the flow valve in the discharge line must get dirty and fouled and lets water go up the discharge line into the fridge. I have a foot pump to drain and then the line goes through a one way flow valve to the same seacock as the galley sinks. I never use ice to cool the firdge - or very little. I decided to disconnect the drain line from the tee into the sink link drain hose and I removed the one way valve too. Now, if I ever have water in my fridge which happens very often, I just use the foot pump to pump the water out and the drain hose goes directly to the bilge. No more water in the fridge!!
