After a recent sail the sliding flexible wood door in what was designed as a TV cabinet (Mk II starboard side forward of the twin seats) got jammed. The only way to open it required sacrificing the sliding door. Now I have an empty and out of date space with an open hole where the TV was designed to be. The concept of a CRT TV is out of date.
My question: has anyone tried to convert or adapt this space? Put a door on the opening - if so how? Any suggestions?

Kirk,
I agree with the lack of need for a CRT TV. I turned mine into a liquor locker. I took an old piece of teak & holly floorboard, cut it to fit inside the locker, cut out appropriate sized holes for my favorite bottles, and fitted it on "legs" about 3" tall. Now all the bottles are snug and never move or rattle.

My door is coming apart; the flexible 'cardboard' material on the back is splitting vertically. Current plan is to remove the upper part of the cabinet, remove the door, bring it home and glue canvas to the back; sort of like building the top for a rolltop desk.
I'd like to re-engineer the cabinet, but haven't yet come up with a design yet, that fits my needs. Until then, it has an LCD TV in there on a swivel arm, with a DVD player above.

Have a look at "John Lively's Upgrades to Sea Change", on this website's Technical - Upgrades library for one nice diea how to modify the cabinet. His woodwork is sheer artistry, well beyond my capabilities, but the drawer idea is a good one.

The original cabinet is truly a waste of space. I've seen the cabinet that someone made for the spot. When I was younger I had done similar work on my other boats. Now I have no time and more money than ambition. I wish someone would make a commercial version of that cabinet. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

I know that this is a little late:
We replaced the door on our cabinet. Apparently HandL Marine woodworking did most of the Catalina Cabinetry and they had no problem matching the door.
They have a pretty efficient means of ordering and verifying the design and specs before shipping.
