Stick engine stop cable

My engine stop cable has gotten very stiff recently. I had it lubed at the beginning of the season - but at this point, I am the only one strong enough to stop the engine (wife and kids struggle) which is not safe.

I plan to track down the sticking point this weekend. Anyone had this? I am hoping it will simply require some grease. Any pre-advice is appreciated...

It may be more than just the cable. You may need to get into the section where the cable attaches to the engine. There's a spring in there. Check out the blow up diagrams in the engine manual, either here or at www.marinedieseldirect.com.

Catalina Direct sells a new cable with handle and hardware for $105. Cut the old one on the back side of the panel, feed the new one through and tape it to the cut end of the old one, pull it carefully through to the engine and hook it up. Took me about half an hour including 15 minutes of worrying about the tape pulling off. I ended up twisting some fine wire around it for added grip. What a difference!
