I am recoating the decks and rebedding the deck hardware as well on our 1987 Mark I Catalina 36 (hull #713). There are stanchion posts in the mid ship area on both sides.
On the starboard side there is a set of shelves between the settee seats that has a panel on the top. In a similar fashion in the u shape dinette there are a set of shelves with a panel on top. Both panels block access to the bottom of the stanchion post.
I am looking for information on how to get access to the nuts to remove the stanchion posts.

Hi,
there will be some screws (small) holding the upper panels in place. you just need to be sure you remove all of them or you will wind up tearing the very thin panel (1/8") in think. don't ask how i know. once removed it will be a simple matter to gain access to the nuts that are holding the stanctions place.
good luck

Mike,
Thank you for the info.
The screws must be very small since I did not see them when I shone a light in there. It looked like a groove was cut in the cabinetry that the 1/8” panel was slid into.

I have just gone through this. Unfortunately they are not screw but 3/4" narrow crown staples.... not easy to get out. After I got one out with some frustration the other came out only after breaking. I ended up cutting access holes in the panels before they are reinstalled so I can get at them in the future. If you want I can givve you the measurements for the hole acess.

Ross,
Thank you for the update.
What you are describing sounds like what I have.
I was thinking about using a multi tool with a saw blade and a rotary saw to cut and access hole since there is not enough room for a drill and hole saw. Then I would cover the access opening with a panel attached to the existing panel.

Sounds like the solution. It is one of those designs that somebody did not think through. You will also have to take everything out of the port hatch in the cockpit, wiggle into the hatch, reach blindly throught the rough cut acess holes so that you can get at the aft port stantion and the bolts for the aft rail..... I may be getting too old for this.

Ross,
I am getting too old for these things as well.
Yes, a couple of wood screws as described by Mike in the posting above would make it much easier and a lot of sense. Just hope I can get the tools in the small compartment.
BTW, I was planning to access the aft port stanchion by the hole in the port hatch compartment. How were able to access the forward plates for the stern rail?
Yes, I will update my profile. It was there at one time…..

At the other end of the compartment there is another acess hole. I have seen it but have yet to get in there..... It is as far back as you can go by the engine instruments. My plan was to cut it bigger before I tried anything.

I think I have seen that “access” hole which is in the same panel as the other hole near the aft port stanchion. In the aft hole there is a hose, I think for the manual bilge pump. Not much access through it.

The "trick" I've used for inaccessible stanchions is to first, clean up the top with FSR to get rid of the rust stains, and then to use Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure to seal the holes.
The few stanchion bolts I've removed, where I can gain access, have been rusty, but still solid.

Stu,
Thanx.
There are some of the bolts and plates in the aft area that I will not probably be able access. Your suggestions sound like a good solution.
