I have a 1984 36" Catalina MKI, I am looking for a replacement Strut, a portion has been eaten away and I aw unable to get the cutlass bearing out without the Strut breaking apart. Used would be fine if anyone knows of a source.
Thanks
Rick

Catalina direct has them, I suspect Catalina could also supply if you ask.

I had to replace mine a couple of years ago as it was just crumbling. I contacted Catalina and Catalina Direct and they did not have them but they gave me the manufacturer's representative who could get it for me on a rush basis for what I thought was an extravagant sum. The owner of Bittersweet Boatyard where I store my boat thought he could get a local fabricator to make one out of stainless steel and I believe the cost was under $600. What I had made was to have the heaviest cutlass bearing for a 1" shaft I could get. Reason? Here in Maine lobster warps can be a real issue and I have used Spurs for close to 39 years. Problem I experienced over the years is electrolysis eats away at the tapped hole. I was able to increase the size of the support for the cutlass bearing by using a larger diameter SS Pipe welded on to the base (Remember I said fabricated strut). Anyway it has been about 4 years since I have done this. I had initial concerns on the weld , but my fears have not proven true and I suspect the fabricated strut will outlive the hull.

You can buy them from Catalina Direct. I had to replace mine in November 2014. The one they shipped looked a lot stronger than the old one, which had broken. Attached is a photo of the new strut during the first step of its installation and after completion of installation. The strut comes complete with the cutlass bearing. I got help form a boatyard's fiberglass and epoxy expert to do the work.

One of a sailor's miserable moments ... a stern line getting very tightly wrapped around the shaft! Resulting in bending the Strut and Shaft and damaging the PSS gland.
How to fix:
1. Confirm it is bent by diving under the boat (Goggles and Flippers help).
2. Download from this site all the Catalina installation Strut drawings (search in the Member's section)
3. Contact a trusted Marine Engineer and your insurance company
4. Haul the boat for the Assessor and Marine Engineer ... then remove the Prop, Strut Bearing and Shaft.
5. Order a new Strut from Catalina Direct (part # Z2228 ... see Catalina Direct website and search "Prop Strut") Cost $650.80. Make sure they have one in-stock and you specify your size (provide C36 model number and hull number).
6. Boat will then get the full Marine Engineer and Shipwright 2 or 3 day repair/replace treatment.
The cost will exceed $6100 ... fortunately I will only be liable for my Excess (deductible) of $1000 (Hull). As I write, the Strut is still to arrive to my home in Sydney, Australia.
Note great assistance has been given to me by C36 Owners via the E-mail List and this Forum. These include directions to Catalina Direct part number, how to Search our Members C36 site, photos, technical drawings and technical advice. Prime examples of this excellent, must have, Association.
Big thanks ALL.
