Rudder post diameter?

Edson has me on a wild goose chase for the precise diameter of the rudder post for the bronze tiller arm. Challenge is that I cannot find a caliper wide enough to go around the post.

Does anyone know the diameter of the rudder post?

If you can remove the access plate on the cockpit sole (necessary if you ever need to use the tiller), can't you put a tape measure across the diameter? Not as accurate as a caliper, but you should be able to get within 1/64 inch.

I had a new rudder fabricated about a year ago.

The rudder which was replaced (was not the original either) measured
2.870" diameter

The new rudder measured 2.858" diameter

Edson needs the correct number when they bore the tiller arm for your autopilot.

HARBOR FREIGHT has a digital caliper for less than $20, often on sale for like $13.

Get one!

I may have made this harder than it needed to be. I tried to measure with a digital caliper on the post just under the radial quadrant via the access in the rear berth.

I did not remove the cockpit cover to the post as if figured it would be covered. Also, the hardest way should be the best way! :)

I will try rudder access in the cockpit today while I am at the boat.

To close this thread out and serve as somewhat of an update to Larry's excellent below decks autopilot installation:

When installing a below decks autopilot you need to attach an Edson tiller arm to your rudder post. Why? Because the Raymarine type I linear drive can put out 650lbs of thrust - this could wreck your quadrant if

1. Edson does not know the size of your rudder post and you will need to go buy a digital caliper (got mine at Lowes) to measure the diameter of your rudder post to order.
2. You cannot measure the diameter of the post from below decks under the radial quadrant as you cannot find calipers with long enough fingers
3. Remove the rudder plate in the cockpit floor behind the pedestal, where you would connect the emergency tiller and this gives you access to the top of the rudder post.
4. My measurement was 2.862" which Edison said was exactly the Catalina spec (hmmm)
5. Bronze tiller arm was $450

Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for all your further clarification, Jim. Together we are a lot smarter than we are individually.

To expand upon Jim's last post.

I spoke with Will Keen, the president of Edson about 8 mos. ago on this subject.

Edson has a milling machine already set up to bore tiller arms and quadrants for the C36. They will shim the part before milling to get the proper interference fit.

If I recall Will said they aim at about .003 undersize.

Will is a great guy, if you ever have a question or problem, call him direct.
