We have a small crack in the rudder of our Mk1 with rusty water coming out, can anyone point me to a diagram of the internal steelwork construction of the rudder? Mainly need to know how far the rudder shaft goes down into the rudder itself... Thanks :)
I found the diagram of the MkII rudder... but it may be a bit different'
Stop press! Catalina sent me the drawings, so that's OK. I will upload them here so all can see them. Our rudder is the one with the mild steel metal plate welded to the stock. The crack appears to coincide with the bottom of the stock tube. :(

Rob,
Sorry, I do not have a diagram for you but, in seaching some old posts on rudders I found a note stating that Gerry Douglas had stated that the rudder could be shortened as it is on the shoal draft C36 with little consiquence unless flying a large spinakar. Not sure I would want to take that step myself as I have found the rudder near its limit many times on the San Francisco Bay in windy conditions when I should have shortened sail.
I was in a partnership on a Erickson 32 for a period of time, it was a spin master, the rudder would stall if you let the boat get overpowered to any degree and would rapidly spin upwind. You could turn it into a quick tack if nothing was to windward.
Another option is an aftermarket rudder if yours is BER (beyond economic repair). I have heard nothing good or bad about this product but, they talk a good story.

Hi Rob:
The image in your first drawing is what I found when I modified my rudder. Have a look at the July 2011 Jib Sheet article I did on modifying my MK1 rudder to the newer configuration.

Thanks Tom & Janis :-)
Yes, the drawing equates with what I found when I drilled a 50mm hole to find the cause of the rust weeping out of the crack...
I was surprised the tang was magnetic - mild steel...
We're currently in New Caledonia planning to return to New Zealand in November, so any repair will have to be quick!
