Roller Furling Choices - ProFurl B35S OK?

Hi All,

Defender has The ProFurl B35S for $900.00, and I'm looking for some practical advice about it. Galahad is a C36 MK 1, hull #54. The boat was raced quite a bit before I bought it, and I have been happy with the racing headfoil system. Now I'm getting lazy, and it's time for roller furling. Defender has the ProFurl B35S on a "special buy", and I'm wondering if it would suffice. I've always raced, and have never owned a furler, so I'm in need of sage advice.
Is this a deal for me? Any other choices that are clearly better? What say you?

Thanks,

Rob

I would say that would be an incredible price for a furler sized for a 36' boat.
I installed a Classic Profurl a couple of years ago and it was nearly double that price. The basic unit seems to be very nearly the same thing.

My opinion is that Profurl's design philosophy is similar to Garhauer -- rugged, simple and functional with few bells and whistles.

I do think that the sealed bearings Profurl uses will need replacement at some point, but I don't worry about them failing prematurely (ie within the 10 year warranty). In the cases I've read of, Profurl has been very good about standing behind their product.

Rob,
Just wondering, what you mean racing headfoil system? Is that a furling system as well. Reason I ask is that my boat came with a Hood continuous line system. In my checking I found there was a conventional conversion offered by Hood which changed it from continuous to the more conventional drum coil and line. Believe it was about $750 and all I had to do was trade in the original base. Hood no longer exists but www.pompanette.com is located in NH and makes the Hood Systems now.

Hi Gary,
My boat has never had roller furling. By racing headfoil I just meant that I have a pile of sails, and they go up on a double grooved foil on the forestay. I choose the sail for the conditions, but I have to drop it and fold it at the end of the day. A sail change can mean a lot of work, especially when I'm singlehanding (which I do a lot). And now you have multiple sails to fold at the dock.
I see the furler boats come in with everything already put away and I get envious. With a foil, when the sail is dropped it's only captive at the three corners. Dropping the #1 in a sudden squall can be a bit of a challenge as the loose sail fills and refills while you struggle to control it. Hanks are better for keeping control of a lowered sail, but the furler is the clear choice. I'm ready to accept the limitations of a single sail choice, and get to happy hour sooner.:)
The Profurl people tell me this unit is a good fit, it's just the older model. The newer C350 model is virtually the same, except it has two luff grooves instead of one. At $900, it would seem to be a heck of a deal.

Alas, it was not to be. My C36 has a 5/8" pin on the forestay, and these "special buy" units are packaged with 1/2" pin setups. No changes are possible, so no go.
Bummer.
