Replacing the stripe with rolled product

Has anyone used this product from Catalina Direct?   Replaces the painted blue stripe with a "taped-on" stripe.  My single blude stripe is looking faded and thought this might bring back some luster, but don't want it to look cheap.

Actually, the newer boats use vinyl stripes from the factory.
I had a patch of my stripes (my boat has two "royal blue" stripes (one wide, one narrow) that had been rubbed off by the fenders - so I ordered this product and applied it last summer - no problems, looks good like factory.
Same kind of thing when I changed the name on the boat - used vinyl lettering.
I used a spray bottle with some soapy water and applied (gave me a little "wiggle room" to move the vinyl slightly if I had to)  then just gently rubbed out any air bubbles.

If your referring to the boot stripe near the water line that's in the gel coat, a friend of mine used very fine wet sand paper on his, then polished it up and brought back the bright blue color. He was very pleased with the results. Might want to try that on an inconspicuous place first.

No, I was referring to the line near the rub rail.  Mine is a single blue line.  Sounds like it should work according to Howard.  Going to haul out in the next couple of months for a bottom job and want to freshen her up cosmetically.

Phil... I replaced mine by the toe rail too using tape from Catalina. Only thing you have to be careful about is getting it perfectly even going down the boat. Its easy to get a slight variation and once the tape goes on its hard to take it off and reseat.

Hey Phil,

We used the Saphire and Turquoise tape and it looks great.  What worked for us was to first lay a strip of one inch painters tape along the length of the hull, then lay the stripe tape below the painters tape butted up to it so it followed the same curve.  It was easy to put on and take off the blue painters tape a few times to get a fair curve that looked good.  Once the painters tape was down and looked right, butting the stripe tape to the painters tape was helpful.  We followed the instructions about using the soapy water.

Thanks Dwain.  I have the MKI, so  the single blue stripe would be all I'd need.  Appreciate the feedback.

Phil,

I hope I'm not too late.  I have a 1984 Catalina 36 MKI with the same stripe.  Mine was not faded but I wanted to change the look and put a Bright Red Vinyl Tape over the Blue.  My stripe was 3/4" inch wide and you can get that tape from West Marine from their Graphics Division.  That tape from Catalina Direct appear to be 1 1/8" inch Wide.  Not sure why you would want change the width ?

Phil,
Whether the boot stripe at the bottom or the sheer stripe by the rubrail Chuck Parkers suggestion is a way to revive the color of faded gel coat which both stripes are. You could test a portion of the stripe to see if you like the outcome and if not you can use the tape. You would use something in the 600 to 1000 grit wet sand paper.

Thanks Gary.  I'm hauling out next month for a bottom paint job.  I had asked for a quote to do a thorough machine buff and wax of the topsides, and was surprised at how expensive it was.  Like $700.  But they agreed to waive the haul/block/launch fee of about $350 if I did it, so it's only effectively about $350, so I'll do it, but ask that they pay particular attention to the boot stripe and rub rail stripe.

The boot stripe can be brought back.  Here is my before (haul for survey) and after (following spring launch).  Removing that 28-yr old brown rub rail with a new one grey goes a long way too.

This year the Admiral wanted a change....  so we painted the boot stripe and tried two colors of grey 1.25" wide vinyl for the upper stripe but couldn't find the right color match.  So launching with the oem upper gel coat light blue for now.  Will revisit next year.

Russell, the rubrail replacement looks really nice.  What was the cost on that, and how hard was it to seat the new rubrail?

Phil, we like it too.  Makes the boat look 10 years newer!  It is the product from Catalina Direct for $260:
http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm/product/1337_809/rubrail-c-36-cl...

It takes a minute to figure out what combination hand tools works best.  What worked best for me was inserting a few inches in the bottom track by hand, then using a plastic body panel to to insert/push then work the top portion completely into to top rail, an inch at a time while keeping a few inches in the bottom rail inserted ahead of the top rail.  Overall, it took a few hours, but easy work.  After removing the original rub rail, clean the groves inside the aluminum track and open up the grove if sections were bent in over the years.  I also filled several holes through the track where the prior owner used screws to secure the original rub rail.  Guess it fell out over the years.

Looks like an easy way to keep her looking from looking her age.  I'm having the yard do a complete buff and wax of the hull, which will probably make the rubrail stand out even more.

And interesting.  I just noticed you have a wing keel.  I didn't know they made them on the MKI.

Phil,
If your rubrail is not awfully beat up you might try Lacquer thinner or acetone to clean the rubrail. It works!

So I have the boat hauled right now, and reluctantly agreed to pay for a complete deep buff and wax (about $650).  I think it was worth it.  Just sent me some pics, and at least the boot stripe, but it looks like the other stripe as well, look like they have been pretty well restored.  I'm going to just need to stay on top of it.

My rub rail is not too bad, but I just think that gray color has a much cleaner look.  May be an upcoming project.

Lacquer thinner - yes,  acetone - no. (too harsh will cause it to yellow in a year and might even get 'sticky', yuck)
After cleaning with lacquer thinner rub on a thin coat of "Penetrol" to protect it...
