Replacing Sherwood Pump

I'm replacing my pump with the Oberdorfer and I've found you can't screw in the two hose nipples as, if one is in, the nipple on the other hits the first as it turns. Anyone have an easy suggestion other than cutting down one nipple with a hack saw?

Thanks

Chuck,
Cutting down one of the nipples is exactly what most people have done.  There is still plenty of room for the hose clamp to grip.

Thanks Tom... I was hoping there was an easier solution. Looks like a really poor design. When I talked to the pump shop guys they didn't even seem to know this was a problem.

Chuck,
If one nipple is straight, and the other one is a 90* elbow, it's not a problem!  :-)

Is there an Oberdorfer pump that is a straight replacement without modification for the 35B engine?  What's the best place to order it from?

Chuck,
I'd suggest that you talk to Oberdorfer customer service directly. When I purchased my pump kit from DEPCO PUMPS in Tampa, the replacement pump was not listed on the Oberdorfer web site but the Oberdorfer Customer Service Department seemed to know about it.
I purchased the Oberdorfer Kit from DEPCO - Tampa who knew all about it and  seemed to suggest that it was designed to fit any and all of the Sherwood applications without any grinding. Might be worth giving them a call.
Both numbers can be found on the internet.

Bill... that's who I got it from....  neither the sales guy nor the tech services guy was helpful at all about this issue. The pump I got doesn't require the grinding of the flange that some had to do..... it's just that the nipples can't both be screwed in..... one has to be shortened

Chuck,
That is the case with all Oberdorfer pumps.  I should qualify.  Not ALL Oberdorfer pumps.  OUR Oberdorfer pumps.  The ports for the hose barbs/nipples are the same distance apart for all of the pumps that fit our Universal engines, so trimming one of the nipples is necessary.  But at least the pump you purchased does not require grinding down of the pump body, as many have done.

Chuck & Tom;
When I talked to DEPCO they urged me to order the 'kit' rather than the individual pump. I did. The Kit turned out comes with new right angle nipples and a solid 'L' bracket that holds the pump to the engine plus new screws. I installed the pump myself but dont recall having the same problem as yourself. I do recall the nipples had to be installed into the pump in unison in order that one would swing by the other.
I'd like to see a few pictures of your installation....

Chuck-
When I replaced mine, the one nipple required just a minor grinding with a dremel. Couple of other suggestions- while you have the pump removed, check that there is a pump shaft sleeve in the engine block. There was an M35 recall because this part was omitted on some engines and it will increase the risk of shaft failure when it's not in place. Also, check that your new pump's weep hole is oriented so that any water leaking through the seal will drain through a low point in the pump housing and not into the engine. If the weep holes are nowhere near the bottom of the housing- you may want to consider carefully drilling a small hole.

That said, life is good with an Oberdorfer- also had one our C30 and it worked well.

Got the nipples in place, the old pump out and ready to install the new pump.... one last question.

The new pump came with a paper washer. Do you need to use some sort of gasket seal when you install or is the paper washer enough without anything else?

Thanks

It needs a gasket as large as the mounting base with 2 holes for the mounting bolts. You can purchase gasket material from auto-store and cut one from it. You want the gasket not to be much thicker than 1/32" so that the shaft mates as much as possible. Also the shaft from the engine that has a cut in it must have a ring around it to keep it from breaking. If you do not have the ring installed - Contact Westebeke and they will send one free of charge. I have the part number for the ring.

Thanks Haro... but I have the paper gasket. My question is do I need to coat that in a gasket type glue?

I put caulking on the gasket - both sides, it will make sure that it will not leak. Here is what I use Verachem Part number 23009, $ 3.99 at O'riely's or any auto store. This paste is suitable for use to make contact with diesel oil.
