remove cabinetry around mix elbow??

Well, i bought the SS mixing elbow for my 25xp from Catalina Direct$$, and am stumped by the box(in the aft cabin) over the elbow...I cant find any plugs hiding screws,or any visible signs of fastenings...except for the plugs in the teak fiddle rail..that cant be it..is it?Anybody done this?Access from the motor side is impossible.

Grieg,

It has been a while since I have been there (I do not miss it). As I remember there are about five fasteners on the vertical support on the inboard side of the shelf that runs from the shelf to the floor in the passageway to the aft berth. I removed those and then found two screws at the far outboard (port side) where the shelf meets the cabinet on the outboard side under the reading lamp just outboard of the pass through to the galley. The shelf and inboard leg then came out as a unit.

Greig. Not sure how much difference there is between your m25 and our m35a. But I have had our muffler and the elbow out with out taking any shelf or teak apart. Last fall I had to repair the muffler and at the same time I installed the silcone hump hose. I also rewraped the mixing elbow with new heat cloth. To remove the muffler and all it was about an hours work to remove what I had to for the repair. Removing is quicker then installing. Just a FYI

I agree with Randy it should be relatively easy to remove the muffler & exhaust without having to remove the cabinetry? I did mine a year ago with new exhaust mixer (also from Catalina Direct) and hump hose, just needed the engine cover off for more light and a bit of room. M35 is much larger than M25

Greig,
Let me expand on Steve's explanation. There are wooden "cleats" on both the inboard and outboard ends of the box. The cleats are fastened to the bulkheads, and the box is fastened to the cleats FROM THE INSIDE. The screws on the inboard end are not that hard to reach, but the ones on the outboard end are a PITA. You have to do it blind, but it can be done. You can get at the outboard cleats by reaching up next to the aqualift muffler, and you can get at the inboard cleats by reaching in from the main cabin. Whatever you do, please don't cut the box as I've seen done by several owners. It looks AWFUL afterwards. I've attached a pix showing the outboard cleats. Hope this helps.
