Hello,
Can anyone tell me what the bolt on the heat exchanger on my M35B is for? I have been using it for a connection to my additional overboard zinc anode. Not sure if this is the correct application for this??
See the attached photo.
thanks,
Mike

The bolt holds a zinc. The bolt typically has a female thread on the inside that the zinc screws into. Look up pencil zinc.

Hello Les, not this bolt... yes, I know about the zinc, I service it regularly. Look at the picture closer and you will see the stud with a nut and lock washer on it. This is what I'm calling a bolt. I should have called it a threaded stud.

Hi Mike – My hull is only a couple behind yours and I don’t have that on my heat exchanger.

We don't have one either. Maybe an aftermarket heat exchanger was installed that could accomodate a different mounting? Might be that if there is a similar bolt(s) elswhere on the unit?

Hello Bob and Paul,
Thanks for your replies. Interesting... maybe my HE was replaced by the previous owner? The boat was only 10 years old with 662 hours when we bought it. Looking at new replacement HEs I don't see a stud on these either.
I guess the green corrosion is normal on these things?
Any thoughts on using it as a connection point for the overboard zinc?
thanks,
Mike

For the HE to do it's job it should be bonded to the engine /ground. This was typically done using the mounting straps. If the HE was relocated away from the engine you need to provide a ground path. That might be what the "extra" fastener is for.

That makes total sense to me. Thanks Les.

A small amount of green corriosn is fairly normal. Too much, and it may break the encap seal and start leaking sea water. Not a bad idea to periodically remove the endcaps, bronze wool the corrosion and replace the endcap gasket and center bolt o-ring. I usually spray a little touch up paint afterwards.

Thanks for the good suggestion Paul. Ahhh, another project to put on the list! Keeping these boats in top shape can be a full time job! Too bad I'm not retired yet! Cheers

Hi Mike!
I have exactly the same heat exchanger I installed last year (http://www.mrcool.us/200420cn-universal-westerbeke-medalist-heat-exchang...). According to the documentation, if I remember correctly, you are supposed to connect this bolt to the ground. I didn't do it.

Thanks Ludo, I'm getting the picture now... for grounding or bonding to the engine ground. With all the silver paint on the engine it is hard to know if good bonding has been done. I'll investigate further.
