My stock Motorola 51A alternator for my Universal M-35 died on the second day of a ten-day trip, so I needed to get a new alternator ASAP. I checked the C36ia.com web site and based on a number of recommendations, I ordered a Prestolite Leece-Neville 8MR2069TA with expedited delivery from ase-supply.com in Oregon: http://www.ase-supply.com/Leece_Neville_110_602_12V_90_amp_ALTERNATOR_p/ln-110-602.htm
Since the alternator has a 17mm shaft, I needed to get a new pulley as well. I ordered the following pulleys:
http://www.ase-supply.com/product_p/ni-p-166.htm
http://www.ase-supply.com/product_p/ni-p-277.htm
I used the P-277 pulley. The shaft takes a metric Allen wrench and then I used a crescent wrench on the bolt to attach to pulley to the alternator. This all worked great as the same belt fit perfectly.
My concern is the P-277 pulley does not have a key where the P-166 pulley does have a key. I checked the Prestolite web site and found this hardware diagram: http://www.prestolite.com/literature/tech/alts/TSB-3021_8MR_Hardware.pdf
It references a part 811 key for the shaft.
I am back from my trip now, so I have more time to make sure this was done correctly.
Should I order this key and use the P-166 pulley instead of the P-277 pulley?
Thanks,

Ron, have you considered calling ASE? There are two Bobs there, both great fellows.

Stu,
I called Bob at ASE, and he says the alternator does not take or require a keyed pulley, so using the P-277 pulley is fine. Thanks for the reply, it was helpful.
