Port Side GFI

My Port Side GFI has been tripping recently, I've added nothing new to the circuit or any extra demands. When it trips I reset it and sometimes it'll be fine for hours and at other times it will trip again within 20 minutes; this is only a recent problem, I've owned Sceptre for 2.5 years now and this has never ocurred before. Is the fix as simple as replacing the switch in its entirety or should I be searching out a some new hidden problem?
Thank you,
Tony

Assuming your '95 is the same as my '97, the port side GFCI is located on the bulkhead behind the hatches for the fridge. That GFCI protects all outlets on the port side, include the one in the head and forward cabin. It could be tripping due to a true ground fault on any of those outlets, or the GFCI outlet itself could be failing. GFCI outlets aren't all that expensive, so replacing it would help narrow down the cause, assuming you know how to do so and turn off the AC; I'd unplug the shore power cord.

My starboard side outlet trips once in a blue moon, never could figure out why. The I was onboard in the slip one day when a lightning storm came through. GFCI popped about a half second before I heard a loud clap of thunder. Hmmmm, wonder if that was the cause? Nothing is plugged into any outlet.

The load on the circuit is irrelevant to the GFCI tripping, an overload would trip the AC breaker on the main panel.

Our starboard side one trips all the time in cold weather like at this time of year if I'm working on the boat I'll have to reset it 2 or 3 times before the lights will stay on. But all summer long it's fine. Probably should just replace it.

Tony, you probably will remember, but just in case you have forgotten, don't forget to turn the inverter off as well. An electrician who specializes in boat elelctrical systems has been bugging me about adding a shutoff switch to my inverter. He says that all boats with inverters that come installed from the factory are reuired to have a shut off switch to be considered safe.

I actually have a blank spot on my board that is even marked CHARGER/INVERTER. It's just another one of those projects on "The List".

Thanks to you all for your responses. I'm planning a trip to Sceptre within the next week; I'll start the process of elimination by replacing the GFI first and go from there. I'll let you all know what I eventually determine to be the problem.
Thanks again for your input,
Tony
