New Engine! (pics attached)

So when I bought our boat a few years ago, I knew this day was coming. The PO let a leaky back plate on the raw water pump go, and the salt water had begun corroding the engine block, it corroded the nuts that held on the raw water pump making a replacement impossible, it had corroded an engine mount which was the topic of discussion for my ICW trip last year, and it had corroded the engine oil pan at the bottom of the engine to the point where it was literally "sweating" oil.

I have attached pics of the old engine. The first thing you'll notice is that he painted it yellow (presumably so he could see oil leaks-as if he needed the help!) Notice the shot engine mount, the oil tray, and the resultant mess when the engine was removed...

The boat was on the hard for the past year as my work schedule kept me from getting any work done. I finally just bit the bullet and had it all professionally done so I had a perfectly "new" boat waiting for me when I finally got home.

New Engine
Brand New Rigging
Bottom Job
New Harken Furler (not a planned expense, but the old furler had been damaged)

Probably spent too much money (my wife would say I DEFINITELY spent too much money), but one year to the day, she's back in the water!

What engine is this?
My 87 was repowered by the PO with a POS M-25XPB, famous for refusing to idle smoothly below 1100 rpm. He had ordered a Yanmar, but switched to the Westerbeke-built Universal after being told he'd have to modify the engine cowl and ladder to get the Yanmar in there. Even then, this was not a drop-in replacement and something had to be done to the engine mount beds for the install. Removing the heat exchanger zinc is a colossal PITA since you can't hardly get a wrench or socket on it, and is, of course, directly over and almost touching the SS aft engine mount stud.
Also notice that you have the Sherwood pump mounted where one can get to the faceplate (which is held in place by three bolts facing aft on the M-25XPB - see picture) and can change the engine belt without having to remove a hose from the raw water pump. Would like to meet the rocket scientist who designed this!
Was there any modification necessary with your repower?
It would be well for others with the old reliable M-25XP to have an alternative to the currently offered Universal engine.
Thanks for the pictures. Nice looking boat. Great year.

Congrats on the new engine, the boat looks great. Tell the wife what just the sales tax would be on a new 375 and I'll bet she gives Tobaygo a big hug.;)

Hi - looks like you are making a good move there :)

We've put a deposit on a Beta, pretty much the same block as the Universal, but seems to be a tidier arrangement:

Thought about a 30hp, but we really only occasionally need more than 10 HP or so to get where we are going... and the mods to the engine cover, steps and possibly the prop pitch didn't seem worth it.

Will post next year how we get on.

P.S. No mods needed for the engine mount, the feet go in a different spot on the same mounts :)

Even after all the little unpleasant surprises, I still feel good about the deal I got. The PO seemed like a really good guy, but his maintenance program left a little to be desired.

Mike, that's a great call on the sales tax! I'll keep that one in my pocket for the next round of expenses.:D

Nice job, thanks for sharing it.

Jack, I bit my tongue when I saw the Sherwood. Wanna share some morer with him about it? ;)

Only because I saw it but didn't want to dampen his enthusiasm for his new engine, and felt that it might be better coming from a fellow C36 owner, rather than some renegade C34 guy like me! :)

The reason I mentioned it at all is that the Sherwood pumps, made the way they are, are hard to service in a pinch, like when you need to replace the impeller at sea, compared to the Oberdorfer pumps. You great C36 skippers did a tremendous writeup on switching to an Oberdorfer on an M35 engine, and were kind enough to share it with us and it's on our Tech wiki. Also, the parts for the Oberdorfer are available at discount from Depco, unlike the Sherwoods which require list price for sale. We were fortunate enough to have our engine come with an Oberdorfer. But, like I say: your boat, your choice.

The good news is I have a fist full of service parts for the Sherwood so that makes things a little easier, but I'm confused about how changing the impeller would be difficult. The screws that hold the face plate in place face forward, and aren't obstructed by anything that I can see.

I could see how the one in Jack's picture would be difficult to service. What I am not seeing??

To be clear, my engine is the one pictured in the 2nd post on this thread.

If you can get to the screws that way you're in great shape. Do you have the model number of that Sherwood pump?

Stu,

Unfortunately I'm at work (overseas) and won't be back on board for a couple months so I can't grab a model number off of it, but here's a magnified photo if that offers a bit more clarification.

The plate is held on by a fistfull of forward facing flat head screws, so hopefully it shouldn't be too difficult getting that thing off and on while underway.

Your pump looks way easier to work on than the G908's with their backwards bolts and the hoses going into the front housing making it a real PITA to take apart. When you get home would you see if you can find a model number and post it? Also what engine did you put in?
