MK 2 Interior Finish?

Maybe it's just monday but I'm coming up blank with my searching today. Wondering if anyone can help me out with what the varnish was used to finish the teak interiors of the Mk2 (or MK1.5)? I recall it was from Target Coatings but can't remember the actual product.

Thanks

Gary

Gary, the original product is no longer available, the distributor told me the replacement is EM2000WVX, it is compatible with the original finish and it is an interior/exterior product. They used satin at the factory according to Target, I prefer gloss but I used the satin since I wasn't doing everything.

Several people on here have used other water based finishes over it without a problem which is a good thing because the Target stuff not something you find every day and it's kind of a pain to get it.

Does the Target product contain a lightener? It would seem that either Catalina used a bleaching product prior to finishing, or the finish itself had a lightener in it. Wherever I've had the varnish fail, the underlying wood is darker, especially after applying a finish. I've been bringing home various pieces of trim each winter for refinishing, but always wind up stripping them to bare wood first, as the will come out with darker areas if I just re-varnish. Last winter was the companionway ladder (not fun to strip), the louvered cabinet doors, trim below the ports and the head door. Not sure what I'm bringing home this year. An HVLP sprayer is quite helpful. Fortunately, the bulkheads/plywood finish has not needed any touch up as they'd obviously need to be done in place.

I don't know what was used to lighten the wood, or for how many years. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Don't believe there is any lightener in the Target stuff, I have the same problem with dark spots as you, any place that got worn to bare wood will darken noticeably. Now I just strip the whole piece to bare wood, clean and brighten with a two part teak cleaner and then put the finish on. I did the companionway ladder as well and it was a chore alright. I do like water based products, easy to work with and so easy to clean up afterwards.

I can confirm that the "new" replacement is Target Coatings EM2000WVX. I have used the satin version and have had excellent results. It does not contain any wood lightener.

Thanks for the heads up on the wood darkening that would have been frustrating to find out about the hard way. So far I've stripped the swing out drawer from the head as a see what happens experiment but I have several spots around the interior including the foreward bulkhead behind the vee berth hatch. The project is growing, typical I guess. Also removed the floor boards since the factory finish failed around the edges. The finish on these is quite thick and am having to apply multiple coats of stripper and substantial elbow greese to remove. Any advice?

I refinished most of my interior last winter. After investigating the Target product, I decided to save major bucks and go with a water based varnish I got at the paint store. I forget which brand, but they seem to be pretty similar. I went with the gloss rather than the satin, and it seemed to match the existing pretty well.

Is the wood teak or another hard wood?

Gary,
I don't know about other boats, but on Catalinas the wood is teak.
