Light over sink ideas?

We want to improve the lighting in our galley with something more than battery operated lights under the cabinets. I had an idea, which sounds extreme, but the more I think of it the better it gets. Has anyone removed the post on the corner of the sink and drilled a hole through the center? I know a cabinetmaker could do it with a special woodbit. Once the center was cored, you could run some wires thru, and hook up a spotlight near the top. Or if someone has a simpler idea?

Being new to the group, I wondered if there was some way to find previous discussions on making the galley more useable?

Thanks,

Mark Villano

We don't know what year boat MRV has. I know there is no post on my 1999 Mk II.

MRV,
I did exactly that. Worked out very well. Don't try to drill the hole. I don't know who promised you they could do it, but they can't. Impossible to keep a bit that straight for that distance. I guarantee it will wander out the side of the post. Instead, split the post in half with a bandsaw, lengthwise, and router out a channel in each half. Glue it back together, and you'd never know it afterwards. In the Upgrades section of the website is a link to a bunch of photos of Julandra upgrades. I know it is in there. Hope this helps.

Mrv:
I have done just what your thinking of as I have an extra spindle at home in the basement with hole all the way thru it. But here is what I have done to our galley as under the shelf I have 2 led lights with a tiny switch in the cross bar support that turns them on. I am trying to send the pics but I am on limited wifi as we are on the hook, send me a email and I will try sending you a picture

I think the problem is that the later boats didn't have the corner post. Mine is a 1988, and I've updated my profile to include a few more details about the boat.

It was in the corner of the counter, by the upper right hand side of the sink. It extended from the counter top to the ceiling, and is maybe 2 to 3 inches in diameter with a few decorative turns.

Based on a few suggestions from similar era owners (boat age, not mine), I'll try splitting the post in two, and making a channel.

Terrific ideas! Do you have any time left to sail? Did you do them all yourself?

Mark,
Yes, I did them all myself, and they didn't all happen at once. I owned the boat for 18 years!!

I saw the upgrades on Julandra some time ago and have wanted to add overhead lighting ever since but I couldn't even figure out how to remove the post much less run a wire up the center of it.

However, I've figured out I can run wire the wire channel alongside the companion way and it won't be too obvious. I'm going to install an AlpineGlow CFL fixture forward of the companion way, amidships just behind the post. I've already tested the light and am very pleased with the way it lights the entire saloon. On the high setting the light draws .8 amp which to me isn't bad to flood most of the boat with enough light for anything you might need to do even reading while seated on the settee against the bulkhead facing aft . On the lower setting, the light draws .5 amps and the light is adequate for cooking or reading a chart at the nav station. The unit I selected also has red led night lights with high a low settings that draw mili-amps.

I'll try to document the final installation when I get a chance to do some chores on the boat.

Bill,
Removing the post is not that hard. There is a square "donut" holding the top of the post in place. Two screws, covered with bungs, hold the donut in place. That's it for the top of the post. The bottom of my post was held in place by two long self-tapping screws installed from under the counter, up into the post. Remove the cutlery drawer, and it was easy to remove those two screws. Voila! The post is free!
