Impeller replacement

What are your opinions on how often to change the impeller. I have a M35A 30hp Universal diesel in fresh water (Lake Michigan). I am sure I am due for a change.
Thanks,
Richard

I replace mine at 200 hours or 2 seasons. Others replace them every season.

Every season. I store the 'old' one aboard in the event the new one fails. When I replaced mine 2 weeks ago, one of the spokes was broken.

I change my impeller every season with about 100 hours of use on it.

I just (today) got my Sherwood impeller from Torresen Marine, it cost $69.00 with shipping.

The Admiral say's "Why take a chance?" I think she's right. So I change it every year and every year I look the old one over closely for cracks.... I see none!

oh well!

Every season. Cheap insurance to make sure there are no blades that break off and clog the lines or make their way to the heat exchanger - then you have a much bigger job! The impeller won't fail at the dock.

I do the same as Tim and keep the "old one" on board just in case.

Thanks for the feed back. I am in the process of changing mine. Bill, I just bought a Sherwood at Larsen Marine in Waukegan for about $44 including tax.
I have heard of a "blue" impeller that costs a lot more, but is supposed to last 10 years, but I have never seen one.

Richard,
I have read that the Globe (blue) impellers do NOT last as long as the OEM (black) ones do. MaineSail has written extensively about this topic. Here is one of his posts:

Hope this helps.

Thanks. This is an excellent photographic link.
