heat exchanger gasket

Hello all,
Recently purchased a 1984 Catalina 36 and loving it.
The engine is the original Universal m25 with the 3 inch heat exchanger. I removed it to clean the inside, all went well but I have no idea where the rubber o-rings go. They were around the bolt but It seems to me they shouldn't be used at all. The end plates are flat and so are the ends of the HX. Using the o-rings would create a 'bump' on the big rubber gasket.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Henk.

This is not the original heat exchanger.  The older C36s with the M25 came with a 2" diameter HX, so this is an after-market one on your boat.
(we replaced the 2" origninal with a 3" on our boat as well a number of years ago).
I'm not sure where this o-ring would go (maybe you should post some pictures).

That would explain why I can't seem to find anything in the Catalina manual.
I'll keep digging. Thanks.

I believe the o-ring goes under the bolt head. On the outside of the cap.  The big rubber gasket goes on inside of the cap

That was the only thing I could think of too. When I opened up the cap it was embedded in the old big rubber gasket. That didn't look right to me.
Thanks.

Henk.

The o-ring goes between the inside of the cap and the body where the bolt attaches to the body.  If you were put it on the outside the o-ring would get damage from the rotation of the bolt during assembly.
