I need some help.
Had a hard grounding in my 1987 Catalina 36. The boat is in the yard for repairs. The rudder, keel and structural stringers on the hull sustained substantial damage. The plan is to fix all that, as well as re-bed and re-torque the keel bolts.
It is thought there is one forward of the last pair, either under the mast step or just forward of it. Got through to Warren in Catalina's engineering department in FL last Thursday and learned there is one under the fuel tank. However, he was not sure about the forward-most one and asked for photographs, which I supplied. Still waiting to hear back from him.
Had hoped with the hull number there would be construction drawings showing this keel bolt (IF it exists), where it is and how to get at it. Warren noted there were possibly some differences in earlier Mk I model years regards keel bolt placement.
Hate to pull the mast only to find there isn't one, or it's not under the step, and I'm not sure even then how the step fits on whatever it uses for a base and where the keel bolt lives or how it might be accessed even with the mast out of the boat.
My hope is that someone on the Forum has been down this road before and can share their experience. Tried the C36 TechNotes Index, but only came up with the 105 ft-lb torque spec. Tried searching the forum but, as others have noted, no joy. Guess I'm not smart enough to use it?
Would sure appreciate some help.
Thanks

Jack, sorry to hear about your grounding, must be very stressful time. On the Mk II there is for sure another keel bolt ahead of the mast, you have to lift the flooring to get at it. Once the flooring is up there is a small fibreboard panel there and the front bilge pocket and keel bolt is in there. I would have thought the Mk I would be the same since they are supposedly both the same below the waterline, but surely another Mk I owner will have more info.
I have a1984 #226 and there a keel bolt in the same location as mentioned on the mark two I believe that is true on all of our boats

We found one in front of the mast, two just behind the mast that were NOT visible until we cut away some of the cabin sole (see photo) and were somewhat corroded. You might see them with a light and a mirror from the little hatch in front of the mast...
Our mast step was rotten and had to be replaced :-(
