Fuel Lift Pump

Mornin' folks,
I'm a relatively new Cat 36 owner (1983 Mk I). I've been trying to identify the source of diesel fuel in my bilge and a strong odor of fuel in the cabin without all hatches open. The sending unit gasket was one culprit and has been replaced. I've cleaned all of the bilge I can see and as much of the fuel tank as I can reach with orange cleaner, and still have the strong odor. I'm sure there is still a coating of fuel on the side of the tank I can't reach. Whether I have a continuing leak is a question still to be answered.

I've checked along hoses for leaks and have found only that the fuel lift pump has fuel all over it and the connecting hose at the connection. Since it's a sealed unit (Facet Posi-Flo 60106) I'm assuming it is the source or at least one of the sources and needs to be replaced. Before buying a replacement, even of the same make and model number, I wanted to be sure I'm getting the correct specifications in order to avoid causing other problems. The engine is a Universal M25. I can find nowhere, owners manual or web, the recommended or required PSI or any other pertinent specifications.

Also, though there are screw mounting holes, the unit was left loose to be supported by the hoses its connected to. Is that potentially a problem?

If you have knowledge of this or know where I can get reliable information, I'd be very grateful for your input. If you have any words of wisdom on the process of replacing the pump, other possible sources of the odor or leak, or about anything you think pertinent, I'd be grateful for that as well.

Thanks,
Fred

Someone has replaced the origional facet pump with a truck pump ($125 -vs- $20). The trunk pumps work well but cannot stand having the hoses pulled on.   I have one of each type of pump on my boat , which fuel lines coming out of each pump secured to a mounting board with cable clamps (in addition to normal hose clamps.

You can get both pumps at Napa you just need a 5-7 psi diesel lift pump.  Both should include prefilters. The facet is internal to the pump, the turbine pump filter screws to the inlet.

I suggest you replace your fuel pump with electric Fuel Pump type; Facet/ Puralator #476459 ‘Gold-Flo’ Fuel Pump

This fuel pump is also used in light aircraft. Check prices with a company called ‘Aircraft-Spruce’ for Lowest price. Should be less than $80.00 see; http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/facetgoldflo.php?clickkey=4377

This will do an efficient job of delivering your fuel. It contains an internal filter at 70 microns. But if you need to replace the filter the 'Fuel Pump Screen part number for the above is NAPA 810-1086.
