Today I cleaned the fridge and found that the foot pump wouldn't pump. After some mad pumping, it finally pumped th water clear, but also pumped water out on my foot. So it's either time for a new one or a rebuild.
Does anyone know what make/model pump that is? I'm pretty sure it's a Whale pump, but haven't found any reference in the Catalina manual. Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure about the Catalina catalog, but here is just one example of an alternate link. Probably cheaper too!

I found this link with a quick Google search and I think if you do the same, you may find cheaper prices and or kits to rebuild.
I also have one that is broken but have not bothered to fit yet. I seem to recall that the cost of a kit did not merit the work vs just buying a new one.

That's it, Whale pump. It's kinda unique - pretty much the only one of its kind in that shape for that service. I, too, replace rather than rebuild...lotsa springs inside, worse than servicing winches!

thanks for the replies. Looks like a new one is the way to go. By the time you go to the trouble to remove/reinstall the thing, it would not be good to find out that you didn't rebuild it right..!!!

I replaced mine just last week. West Marine has them. About $100 if I recall correctly.
I will rebuild the one I removed and keep it as a spare. You can rebuild them, but it's a fussy job; still, the savings makes it worth it.

My foot pump failed as well. I just removed it and now just let the water drain by gravity into the bilge. I think we can live without it.

My foot pump is removed as well and the drain line from the refer is plugged, with the line open to the bilge it will drop the efficiency of the refer as the cold air too seeks the lowest point and finds its way to the bilge.
If something spills in the refer I do not want it daining to the bilge, a broken soda bottle, orange juice, or beer. I would rather mop it up in the refer. I do get some condensation from my cold plate but I leave the door open on the refer when not aboard and it evaporates with no need for a drain.
The other issue with the pump is if the check valve gets gunked up and it will, you can fill the refer with salt water on long starboard tacks if you are heeled over heavily. I am reluctant to use the term "well heeled".

I had that problem too. I put an anti-siphon valve high up by the sink. I also make sure I get air bubbles out of the sink drains when pumping the fridge dry.

+1 on that. I didn't like having that fridge drain line hooked up to the sink drain and seeing lake water coming into the fridge. Our sink drain line was in rough shape so I replaced it at the same time and it is now a solid hose between the sink and thru hull with no break in it. Hopefully better. Think I might put a plug in that drain at the freezer based on Steve's comments.
Might I suggest that you reconsider draining your fridge to the bilge. That's food stuff draining into the bilge and it's sure to stink up the boat.
I'd suggest plug it or fix it.

Maybe we're lucky, or maybe my bride is very good at filling a boat fridge. But we have yet to have a spill of anything in the fridge of any of our boats, and that's about 12 years worth. The only problem we had was the lake water coming in with this boat and now that's solved. So far we haven't found it a negative.
I had all the same problems five years ago. The PO did a lousy job rebuilding the foot pump (used wrong size valves) so I got a new kit from WM and rebuilt it myself. I also had the water running back into the fridge. I pulled off the front panel of the sink and re-ran a fresh line from the pump well up above the water level and and then down to the sink drain. The water level on a MKll is about even with the second drawer. This has worked well for me and I have not had any issues since doing this even when sailing. I would not let it run into the bilge, I like a dry bilge!

My year 2000 has a Whale Gusher Galley MK III. There are rebuild kits available. You'll need the "MK" number to get the right kit.

This pump is very easy to repair. getting it out from under the stove or whever is the hardest part. The valve go in a certain order and the instructions are very good. I have rebuilted two.

Just to follow up on this; I was finally getting around to ordering the rebuild kit, and emailed tech support at Whale to make sure I knew which kit to order. The kit for the Mk1/Mk2 pump is much different from the Mk3. Here is their reply (quite speedy I might add, just overnight).

Hi Mr. Price,
The Gusher Galley MK 3 went into production in 1984 so that is the
version that will be on a 1997 boat. The service kit for that pump is
AK0553 and can be purchased from any of our distributors. Try Defender
Marine at 1-800-628-8225, MESCO at 1-856-853-8320, East End Marine at
1-631-477-1900, Jamestown Distributors at 1-800-497-0010 or West Marine
at 1-800-685-4838.
