Epoxy fill.....

Today i was prepping the boat for transport to MD and decided it was time to start a project that I anticipate will take about a year to complete (for the sake of sanity). I am going to slowly remove every piece of hardware that is screwed/bolted/etc to the decks....drill the holes about double the size of the fitting, fill with epoxy and then reattach.

Being this is my first time doing this, I solicited the help from a glass guy at the yard so I wouldn't screw it up. I removed a few today, found the expected moisture, continued drilling/digging till hit dry core, filled with Epoxy...waited...drilled the hole for the bolt and reattached the fitting. I am truly shocked how easy this is to fix (lucky so far). This is a project I feel is well worth the time and will not only make for a stronger boat but also will increase my confidence in the boats core.

Just wanted to share as I can only imagine there are many others out there that probably should invest the time to do this. Again, I am floored how easy it is...

Below is an article that dives into the How-to....

Hope everyone is as excited for this season as I am.

Jack- I am hoping to do similar work in the next week or so as we prepare for launch at the end of the month. Thanks for sharing the article.

See you soon in Maryland!

I have done this on many of my deck holes with good success and plan to do this on all of them when I take the mast down for major refit.

Note in this article, how the author uses the dremel to rout out the plywood while leaving the glass for added strength:

This is a bit more work but makes the plug a bit stronger, according to the author.

This worked better for me than a similar method shown by Don Casey in "Sailboat Hull & Deck Repair".

I just finished all of mine and use a small dremel with various types of tools (router bit, etc.). Worked fine.
