Engine Hose Replacement

I’m interested in hearing what brand or type of engine hose others have used when replacing theirs. On my 93 most of the factory added engine hoses (intake, water heater, exhaust cooling, etc) were plumbed using Shieldflex100-0580 series hose. This is the type with a wire helix rated for wet exhaust use. While this model of hose is no longer available they do manufacture a series 200without wire or another series 250 with wire. Trident makes similar hoses. My interest really centers on if I need the helix type hose. I understand using it for the engine intake, it makes sense because of the vacuum application and potential hose collapse but is it necessary on the water heater and exhaust cooling water runs since these are pressure applications. Really comes down to cost, is it worth the price (5/8 dia = $8.59/ft @ WM). Any thoughts

Thanks

I just replaced the hose to the water hearter last week. I used the Trident hose with the wire. I figured the factory used that type of hose for a reason and the boat is being surveyed next month!!!

A few years ago we replaced our water heater hose. On our boats it goes UNDER the galley sole. Out of sight out of mind, right?

Here's what the old hose looked like: reply #7 http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,3769.0.html

We just replaced our exhaust hose with the wire reinforced type. Some pictures here: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,6760.30.html

I agree - use what was OEM.

The wire provides additional reinforcement for lengths without support, and based on that picture, would seem to prevent chafing through immediately. You'd buy just a little extra time before failure.

Those hoses on my boat were 23 and 26 years old!

Thanks Pete and Stu for your perspectives. The run I’m considering replacing is original (19 yrs) and runs from the heat exchanger up to a anti siphon loop in the port lazerette and back down to the exhaust elbow a little shy of 17’. The hose still appears to be ok, and was well supported. The only reason for even considering this project now was because the hose runs are tucked in behind the fuel tank which has been removed for replacement thus making it a relatively easy job.

Gary, I'd look around for less expensive hose. WM is NOT the place to buy this stuff. I got 1-5/8" hose for my 17 FEET of exhaust hose for LESS than what you quoted for the 5/8" hose!!!:eek::eek::eek:

Stu

A little more internet searching payed off finding Shieldsflex II 5/8 diameter for $4.07 /ft at Go2Marine.

The internal helix prevents kinking which then will block the flow. This is what happened to my home washing machine water exit hose - which does not have helix inside and it damaged the internal water pump. I purchased my hoses at KKMI - Richmond.
