Hey all,
During the offseason we had our cutlass bearing replaced by the boat yard. It was seized in the strut so they had to actually pull the engine in to the cabin as opposed to dropping the rudder to remove it. They felt that it was easier to do this than any other method. After putting the engine back and aligning it their diesel mechanic ran it for 45 minutes and looked everything over when they dropped it in the water. We noticed when pulling it out of the slip that when in idle, and placed into gear, there was a clanking noise coming from the engine compartment. We called over their mechanic who then got the head diesel mechanic to come and listen. He put it in gear and raised the RPM's and the noise went away. Last year I definitley know there was no noise when in idle and in gear, but they are claiming that this noise is 'normal' and 'working correctly'. When the RPM is raised the noise does in fact go away but the sound of clanking is not something that makes me feel good. Anyone else have an idea of what may be going on, or am I being wayyy too sensitive and need to just focus on enjoying the boat?
Thanks
Obviously something's changed and "clanking" is not a normal sound. Can you isolate it? Sounds like maybe the damper plate? If so, it would be coincidental and not tied to the work. See if you can listen to the noises in the bell housing.

I thought damper plate at first but it goes away when the RPMs are raised above idling. If it was the damper plate the sound would remain, no?
Damper plate noise will become quieter with higher RPM's. It's loudest at low RPM's.

It's completely surpressed when raised even the smallest bit out of idle.
