I haven't done this, but perhaps taking a hose off the water heater??? I also recall there may be a petcock on the engine block, portside. Maybe this will jog someone else's memory and we'll get an authoritative answer.

There's no petcock I can see on the port side of the engine, but there is a plug that might be the drain. It's located just below what looks like it could be a freeze plug like what's in the engine of a car motor. I hope it isn't the drain plug because the head is somewhat stripped and where it's located I can't get a wrench on it. Maybe best bet would be the heater hose?
From your description, be careful as it might be the engine oil pressure sender you are describing.
If you do not want to disconnect at the water heater you can disconnect at the HE. Have a long tube ready to connect to the hose. It should reach back to beyond the galley so you can get a good gravity feed to a bucket. After refilling remember to Burp the engine.

It was the drain plug for the coolant, and thanks for reminding me about burping the engine. I always find that a hassle as the engine is kind of heavy to lift up over my shoulder and pat, but I manage. Now to reinstall it.
John, AFAIK you disconnect the lowest hose and drain from there. Did that on a powerboat I used to have, have not done it on my new C36 . . .

I know, but I can't figure out which is the lowest hose... maybe the one at the heat exchange?

I stand corrected. Not a petcock; a drain plug, as you say. Sorry.
