Deck Plate/Filler Cap Key

Looking for another option. The winch handle works for this purpose, but space is an issue. Not much room to turn nor can we get the handle in flush on the water tank caps. Seems like it would be easy to strip it. Suggestions for a different solution? I have found "universal" keys that claim to work with these caps but was wondering what y'all use.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff, what I have found works very well for me. I ourchased these nifty blue plasic caps that screw in with a safety chain so you will not lose them over the side of the boat. They also remind me to ONLY load H2O onbaord and no diesel, like a friend of mine did a few years ago.

I believe that I purchased them from Catalina and of course.....they were not cheap, what is??

Apologies. I was not referring to the caps, but the key for loosening/tightening.

Jeff,
If you at all handy with woodworking, you could try something like this:

Follow the link to picture #133 (also titled 7V). Size the square peg to the size of your winch handle insert.

a word of warning regarding those caps.

One spring I had a couple gallons of water in my fuel. Could not figure out where the heck it had come from, and of course, I found it by having the engine shutdown while underway. Finally tracked down the source. The bottom of the hole for the winch handle had cracked where it meets the sides. So any water coming down the deck and into that hole went right in the fuel tank. And I wasn't the only one, it happened to another Catalina at my marina. My best guess is that water got in the winch handle recess, froze and the expansion caused the cracking. I got another cap and never had the problem again, but I covered all of them with tape every winter.

Of course, it couldn't have been a WATER tank that had the filler crack, just HAD to be the fuel, right? Murphy at work.
