converting a bolt rope to loose footed main

Howdy,
I'm thinking about converting my main to a loose footed main. I purchased a stack pack sail cover and even though it has grommets in the bottom it still collects a fair amount of water when it rains. one of the folks on my dock is getting a stack pack from the same place as me but he has a loose footed main so he is having the guy that is fabricating the canvas just make it so it has a few places it will slide into the boom slot. sounds like a good idea but other than removing the bolt rope do i need to do anything to beef up the fittings. on the 36's that have loose footed mains are there any special provisions that you need to make? i have replaced my outhaul with a 5:1 purchase (thanks tom), but i don't know if there is anything else i need to watch out for.

Hi Mike,

I made this change a few months back when I added a stack pack. To answer your question, I didn't change any fittings and all has been fine. In fact my sailmaker recomended leaving the bolt rope foot on the sail....just dont feed it in the track....so I only have the outhaul slug in the track...then the "footed stack pack".

Have had a loose foot main for over 5 years. Did not have to change a thing. All is well. Makes for putting on the main much easier as well as the removal. Out haul works better and no pocket formed at the boom.
I added a stack pack last year and I am still wondering why it took so long for me to do that. Need to drill a hole in the bottom of the boom to allow water to escape, thats all!
