Conversion from tiller to wheel

I have a tiller 36 and want to convert to pedestal wheel steering. Has anyone heard of this?
can someone send me a picture of their wheel rudder post tube in the aft cockpit locker?

You might want to post a little info on your boat - year, type ...  including pic's of the underside of the cockpit deck.

After putting the autopilot in my early MK1 with wheel - it would be a project but probably not too tough.  It will be very expensive if using new parts from Edison.  I would recommend doing a linear style autopilot at the same time if you do get in there to do this.  My write up of that should have a few pic's of that area https://www.catalina36.org/members/technical/upgrades/mk-1-below-deck-autopilot-install

Thanks for the reply. I can't access your posting access denied probably because I'm not a member.
My internet is down right now so working from my iPhone and can't post pics easily.
The boat is a 1984 and has a rudder tube up to the tiller head and would have to be cut off at the top for the tiller arm-I plan on using a Whitlock pedestal I  happen to have new in the box which is a gear driven drag link type. I'm curious to know what the rudder post height is on a boat built for Edson wheel steering, where the stuffing box is relative to the drive wheel. I'd be installing a "tiller arm" instead but assume it would want a similar arrangement.
What I am uncertain of is do I cut a section of the full height rudder tube making room for the tiller arm and leaving some rudder tube support at top of rudder post before it connects with o the tiller head or not.
I agree with your suggestion to install below deck autopilot at same time and is my plan.
Mine other concern is room in the aft locker to work, cutting tube off and glassing in stuffing box/packing gland.
Could you email me the info on your posting?

I don't think you need to cut the post at all. My 83 has a tiller head on it.  You use it in case the cables part. There is a short 18" or so tiller that mounts to it in emergency situations (how you steer with no leverage is beyond me).  The Edson quadrant is two parts and fits just below the lazerett floor.   When I bought the tiller for my autopilot they want you to measure the diameter of the rudder post to nearest .001"  the tiller is honed slightly smaller for o interference fit.

You should become a member. Lots of great info on that area.
Pm me your email and I will send the pdf

As Les has mentioned. Edson website should show you info on the Catalina installation. You already should have a seal on the rudder shaft. There should not be any need to cut or remove any portion you have currently. Not sure what Whitcock has, but you will need a steering quadrant which comes in two pieces which is mounted to the rudder shaft (which is exposed under the lazarette floor). You will need to drill a hole through the rudder shaft and quadrant.. As I mentioned Edson has a good description of what is involved.
