Composting Toilet Vent in Locker?

Hello all,

I will be installing an Airhead composting toilet and I see a suggestion on the Airhead site to vent out into the anchor locker. This seems like a good idea because it avoids cutting a new hole in the deck.

My question is, has anyone done this, and if not, does anyone know whether it is reasonably easy to run a hose from the head to the back of the anchor locker?

It seems like the cleanest, most elegant solution, but I'm worried that it would be too difficult.

Thanks!

Hi Robert,
My boat is an older model.  It has the holding tank vent behind the toilet in the stanchion on deck.  It is ready made.

My MKii has the same vent behind the toilet...no need for a new hole.

I think the holding tank vent hole is too small. The vent for the composting toilet is 1.5 inches inside, I think the stanchion vent is significantly smaller, isn't it?

That's a good point...the stanchion inside diameter is smaller, but the hose attached to it is not.  And, it is venting a much larger tank than a composting head.  Of course the black tank does not have a circulating fan.  I "think" it will work fine, and it is my plan to use it.  There was another discussion over at cruisers forum about venting directly into the black tank via the discharge hose.  Consensus was that there is not lot of support for retaining the black tank if you install a composter.  That said, we prefer the composter and since we are not yet committed to keeping our boat long term we have opted to leave the black tank in place pending our decision.

I had a good look over the weekend, and for sure it would be great if the stanchion vent worked, but I'm not going to take the risk.

There is a nearly clear route from the head to the anchor locker, so that's my tentative plan until you install yours and tell me how well it works! :-)
