refrigaration install

Hey Guys
I'm looking for some input on this. Owning a Catalina 36 MKI, I have finally reached the end of hauling ice for the ice box. Living in a harbor where we have a huge ice plant has always not been a problem, nor putting the blocks in the refer box. I am just tired of it, the problem I see with this is that the MKI ice box is large enough to hold massive amounts of grub, beer, and more beer, and on top of that about a 200 lb block of ice.

I am looking at the friga-boat system with a keel cooler, I like the system alot and I have a few freinds that have this system on board and thye love it. It has alot of features that catch my intrest. Such as the smart chip that will ramp down the compressor rpms, and the size of the compressor I like alot also.

But my main question is, I know that Catalina did not insulate these boxes well back in the day and secondly with refrigreation I dont need such a large box, so what do I do for the problem, has anyone altered there ice chest and made it smaller.
The system I purchsed is good for 10-12 cubic feet of space I stayed on the larger size because the price differnece was not much and I would rather have more than less but the question still stands HOW DO YOU MAKE THE BOX SMALLER and more Efficient.
I had planned on removing the counter top this winter while on the hard and insulating the outside of the box,

ANY IDEAS ARE MOST WELCOME

Thanks in adavnce

Go back thur some articles a few months ago .One guy insulated the inside of his refer and said it really improved it. I am looking at putting insulation around the outside this winter,my wife does not want to give up space inside. It means trying to get around the sides but will will try. We found putting a small fan in the refer this summer helped get the temp cooler away from the small cooler box get a refer temp gauge to check the temp in seperate parts of the refer

Bill,
Do a search in the Upgrades section for my upgrades to Julandra. The link will show several pix of the insulation I used to insulate my MkI. Hope this helps.

Hey Bill just a heads up. Even if you pull the counter top off you will not be able to get to the outside of the icebox. Ben there done it. Unless you cut into the shall under the countertop. I did corian a few years back kn our 1990.

Bill,
while your wife may not want to give up the space and you can insulate the outside of the box to some degree if you want to have an efficient system seems like you will have to provide at least some insulation on the inside of the box. the problem as i'm sure you are aware is almost nothing in the box is square or close to it. I believe there is some information on the technautics web site that provides the steps needed to provide interior insulation but it will be a fair amount of work to get it all fitted in and water tight. i looked briefly on the website but couldn't find the article that discuss the procedure but if you poke around i believe you will find it. if i locate the info i'll post it. BTW you might want to point out to your wife that ice take alot more room in the box than insulation.
good luck.

Hey Bill I can tell you a few other ideas as I have done quite a lot to our fridge but just have never shared what I have done. I have as well added the 1 inch Dow blue board inside our box and then bought a sheet of the 1/8 white plastic shower sheet from Home Depot. That then was put over the blue board and caulked at all the seams. I have a 2 inch divder board in the middle with the blue board and same white hard plastic covering. In the divder I installed a 2 inch pc fan. The fan is controled via a digital thermostat which sucks air from the freezer side and cools the fridge side. Last year I tore out our old Adler Barbour system and installed the large size evaporater an a new BD50 compressor. I had to do some cutting of the glass inside so the larger evaporater would fit. So I had to make some flat pieces of fiberglass so I could seal the box back up. The freezer also is lined with the blue board plus the white shower board over it. The new compressor is controled via a 2nd digital thermostat. The thing with digital thermostats is that you have so many setting you can change to make the fridge run more efficient. One change I will make here in a couple of weeks will be to add a 3rd pc fan in the freezer side just to move air around inside the freezer side. We had so much ice last year in the Bahamas that we gave it away but I noticed that way back in the freezer section it was not cold enough to keep stuff frozen as we had to rotate stuff in the freezer. But all and all we were very pleased how it worked last year in the tropics. Hope this will help.
