Ground tackle
Et vous écrivez très bien l'anglais!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your C36. Perhaps you will find that full membership in our Association will be very helpful to you. In the meantime, enjoy and see how helpful we can be.
Merci for your message. Please excuse any possible mishandling of your language. After all, I am just a froggy.
I closely followed your exchanges about ground tackles: very instructive.
I was looking for anybody with a Bügel anchor and could not find any, probably for good reasons. I could see that members are happy with their Manson Supreme, Delta, CQR and I think I should go for one of those.
Also, our chain is 70 m ss / 8 mm and this does not fold well into the the anchor locker.
Last but not least, we discovered a serious difficulty when launching and recovering the anchor as the gap between the drum of the roller fearling system and the on-deck anchor post is too narrow for a swift operation.
Therefore, the three following questions:
1. Am I right to think that the choice for anchors is between the 3 above cited?
2. Has anybody altered the anchor chain pocket to make it larger or has anybody moved the below-deck anchor winch to the deck to provide more space?
3. I am planning to extend the existing anchor roller bow fitting with an hinged compatible (with the new anchor) prolongation. I do not know if anybody has brought such modification to the MK1 or if the MK2 is fitted with such, now.

Do you think these matters could raise some interest?
Thank you

lavrendios,

I took the liberty of creating a new thread for your questions as they are quite different than the original thread. I am sure you will see some feedback, anchor topics are always a favourite on sailing forums!

In order to help our members give you the benefit of their knowledge, could you create a signature that would include some information about your boat model? Specifically the hull number, year of manufacture, engine and style of rig (tall or standard) would be helpful. There are considerable differences between the various models. Click the UserCP link at the top left and create a signature in there (Edit Signature link).

The 3 anchors mentioned are not the only choices, many people rate Rocna and Manson equally and Bruce style anchors are very popular as well. The CQR is falling out of favour these days. We have Manson Supreme and Delta, but only ever use the Manson as it far outperforms anything else we've ever used, including the Delta. A Rocna would be as good.

With respect to your question 3, we installed a longer roller than stock (8" longer) that we bought from CatalinaDirect.com. It helps with the problem you mention (roller drum) but it does not totally solve it. It would have to be 16" or more longer than stock to solve it.

Some owners have changed the winch from the stock installation. I think you have searched the forum and didn't find an answer so hopefully some others can give you the benefit of their experience.

I know that Larry Brandt (S/V High Flight #2109); has, or is in the process of purchasing a Rocna (Which is very similar to the Manson you refer to, but narrower stock) and has information on some mods that might be recommended.

I have the original CQR (35#, made in Scotland) and because of the length of the stock I have to navigate it around the furling drum, even with a longer-than-oem roller fitting...

Yeah, I need to get writing that article about how anchors ride in the bow roller. Only four people have sent me photos of their anchors so far.

I purchased a new 20 kg (44 lb) Rocna at Fisheries in Seattle. They'll have a boat show special at the Seattle Boat Show beginning Jan 25.

While we are happy with a 45 pound Delta as our primary anchor, it would seem that the Manson Supreme and Rocna are getting lots of great praise from sailors.

I have difficulty getting the heavy anchor up on the bow roller and past the roller furling drum of the headsail. It is a price I am willing to pay at this point, but it would be a major problem for many.

You have 70m of 8mm chain. We have only 25m of 8mm chain and the rest is nylon 3-strand. That fits fine, but I can imagine that 70m does not fit well. Must you carry that much? Can you perhaps use only 40m of chain?

My bow roller is factory stock. I selected the 44lb (20kg) Rocna because of photos I received from John Meyer. He had to modify the bail, but otherwise the Rocna rides beautifully in the stock bow roller.

I just created a pdf as the *beginning* of a thorough survey of C36 anchors.

This survey is intended to identify different types of anchors and show how they ride in C36 bow rollers. It is NOT intended to be a venue for discussing relative holding merits, as there are so many variables, different bottoms, different rodes, different scopes, that the usefulness of the document would be compromised. If your type of anchor is not represented, then please email me information together with photos (especially photos that show in profile how the anchor rides in the bow roller).

This document will reside in the Technical - Reference Library, where it will be accessible only to paid-up Members (capital M) of the C36IA. However, for a week or so I am posting it on the C36IA homepage where it can be viewed by anyone visiting our website. Your quickest way to the C36IA homepage is by clicking 'Catalina 36 International Association' in the blue bar, lower right corner of this page.

Definitly, Yes, as sailing the Aegean Sea during the summer season is challenging.
The prevailing wind (meltemi) regularly blows 30 kts or more, for two months at that.
In the Ionian sea, there is no meltemi but the depths are great.
So, not only the 70 meters are indispensable but I keep a 200 ft rode ready.
A better anchor will probably make the difference, therefore the forum was very helpful.
Now, I have to shop for one, keeping in mind to find the shortest possible shaft (because of the roller furling drum). But here in the Med, I have never heard of the Manson Supreme which everybody seems to agree to be the best.
And, again, the bow roller has to be compatible with the anchor so I am looking forward to see if Catalina can provided some sort of support through an after-sale service or something similar. Does anybody have their details?

Incidently, the German shipchandlery SVB catalogue offers roller fittings with the hinged extention for an overall length of 700 mm instead of the present 600 mm. The difference of 10 cm may not be sufficient to solve the problem.

Thank you for your input.

Thank you, Larry, for this nicely set anchor survey.
I am now looking forward to see if anybody has the hinged extension -or double roller.
Unfortunately, I shall not be able to send photos as I am not in Greece right now but will do
I can see, now, that your Manson Supreme looks like my Bügel anchor.

Haha - Oh no, don't say anything is THE BEST or we'll have a free-for-all!

I have heard many good things about the Manson Supreme and Rocna. Which makes me ponder replacing my CQR... but it's not a change to take lightly. That's why Larry's work here is so valuable to be able to take in all the considerations.
The one thing I do worry about with the Manson Supreme ( because Manson does make a few other anchor models) is that the stock is much "taller"; because of the slot; which might make measuring in the roller and bails that much more critical...

Yes, never is there a "best" anchor for anyone but yourself. Everyone's "best" is different.

Howard, the Manson is no worse to bring up over the roller than the Delta, even though it looks like it should be it's not. The increase in holding power and ease of setting is phenomenal though. I would have bought a Rocna but at the time there were all the "bent shank" issues going on and their prices were stupid, they wanted double what Mansons sell for. Supposedly both those issues are gone now with new ownership at Rocna. Though I did see a picture of a bent Rocna 66 the other day, just not sure how old that anchor was.

Bill, please, let us know how does your extended roller will fit, once installed and if it is worth the move as the difference with the standard bow roller and the longer one is small.

If you check my anchor survey document again, you'll find at the very end of the document an installation using a double bow roller. Details and photos are there. Have a look.
