Not much happening here.  Is our Facebook page active?  If so how can we get on it.  All I get is a request to register.

Do you have a facebook account? If yes, you just need to go there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/C36IA/

One of the (several) reasons some of us were vocally opposed to the move towards FB.
There is a rich, searchable knowledge base accumulated over many years on the C36IA site that FB will never be able to replicate, available to anyone who joins for a measley US $35 year.
Oh well.

I too dropped out of Facebook when I learned just how much of your personal information is being sold.

Hello Enrique,
In response to your "Is our Facebook page active?"
Yes, it certainly is!   It's been 15 months since the Board elected to start our C36/375 IA Facebook page.
They asked me to be the admin. My goal is to use the Facebook presence to bring new members to our IA. And it appears to be working.
• I am pleased to say we now have 652 members in 22 countries.
• Of the 652 members, 583 are 'active', meaning they have either viewed, posted, commented, or reacted to posts.
Over the last 60 day period, we have had:
• 135 new posts
• 1998 reactions

Over the last 28 days, of the top ten most active posts, there have been:
• viewed 3710 times

Our C36/375 IA Mk I Tech editor, Les Troyer, wrote the most active post in the last 60 days, about his winter cruise in the PNW which he is currently sailing, with snow and freezing temps.  His photos are fantastic.
Last week Les wrote our 'Tech Tuesday' post about sailing polar diagrams.

Another is from West Coast Darwin Southard about a humidifier

Oh, the cover of the Spring 2018 Mainsheet was 'discovered' on our Facebook site, posted by a Member David Mottler of his C36 MkI flying a spinnaker.
See photo. We thought it was worthy of a Mainsheet cover, so we submitted it, and it was chosen!  It's being mailed this month.
Earlier, another C36 was awarded the cover, selected from a Facebook submission.

We change our Facebook background image every month, selecting a photo from a C36/375IA full Member, then incorporate with our logo.  See some examples of the previous months.
Feel welcome to take a look:

Steve:  thanks for the post and I was wondering if you can tell me how to search the Facebook page for old information posted there.
You have done a great job on the Facebook page - And I do think it is bring members to our site as well.  But I have a fear that all that  great information and participation that used to happen here in the Forum is now on the Facebook page.  If the Facebook page could somehow be searched from our site so those who don't wish to participate directly there could still find the information in both places when needed - that would be a positive for both sites.
Any thoughts?

Hal et al,
Searching within the C36/375IA Facebook page is fast and easy.
• On IOS (iPhone) there is a search area at the top of the page. This search box remains in place no matter where you are in the Group, whether you're deep into reading posts, etc.  See the attached screenshot of my iPhone's C36/375 IA Facebook page.

• On a PC and Mac, the search bar is on the left side, as shown in the second screen capture.

The search function I am referring to is Group-specific, meaning it only searches within our FB Group page (there are other ways to search all of Facebook). This search function searches for text, photos, files, and is fast, extensive, and exact.
For example, I just did a search for 'RACOR' yielding 23 results, all clickable/linked instantly back to the article with attachments and photos. See screenshot attached.

In response to your concern/fear that this Forum's great information and participation may suffer, I share your concern.  I see no reason why our website cannot show a link to our Facebook Group.
I suggest it's important to cater to both groups, those that prefer our great FORUMS, and those that prefer Facebook. These two fractions tend to be polarized; each group for good reasons. We certainly will not endure long term if we favor one over the other.

Our Facebook group now enjoys 653, the latest just today include longtime member Tom Senator.
I should mention that our Facebook effort is certainly not unique. Our brothers and sisters on the extremely active Catalina 30 Facebook group number a whopping 1875. The Catalina 42/475 Facebook group has 417 members, large imo for the relatively smaller number of hulls. There are groups for the C25, the C38/380 for example. Did you know that there is even a Facebook Raymarine Users Group?

I hope this reply answers your questions.

I will get all my searches in before my 1 year membership is up. Not much incentive to renew with little participation and no new content.

Facebook has done this to many forums.

To me, the availability of the resources of the C36IA was one of the reasons we purchased out boat 9 years ago.
Alas, a sad result of the embrace of Facebook is the hemorraging of formerly vibrant participation here -- as many of us predicted.

Articles like this pursuaded me to delete my FB account; the downsides of its behavior were too large to excuse:

Your mileage may vary.

I use both resources regularly.  The depth of technical resources here is fantastic.  I search this database frequently when I am researching things for my boat - alternate oil filters, the length of genoa sheets I should get, water pump upgrades, etc.  This format is a perfect repository for knowledge like that.  The Facebook page seems to be much more active as far as daily posts, but the content is "lighter" - more about photos of trips and that sort of thing, which is what Facebook does really well.  There are certainly technical questions/posts and deeper topics at times, but I find those more difficult to follow because of the way the Facebook newsfeed functions.  For the time being, I think there is room in the world for both resources.

Agree to all the positive aspects of maintaining both environments.  I do hope the members here "like me" that have a negative view of the Facebook and other social media environments do not miss out on that tool for communcations.  But I do recommend using it wisely for the reasons mentioned above.

Good input here!  Thanks for the responses!
i suggest Member Paul Walchenbach (s/v Mata Hari-Seattle) stated it well on our ‘list’ back in Aug 2016 when we were first discussing Facebook’s inclusion:

i am going to weigh in with a qualified positive vote for a catalina 36 facebook page.

i hate facebook.  it’s invasive, too “public”, too commercial, a time-waster, and doesn’t accurately reflect the “real world" in that people seem to only post positive stuff about their lives and if they post negative stuff it seems like “over sharing”.

all that being said, i check facebook twice everyday.

my yacht clubs (seattle yacht club, corinthian yacht club of seattle, and sloop tavern yacht club) all have facebook pages.  my two cycling clubs have facebook pages.  my motorcycle club has a facebook page.  my backcountry hiking/climbing club has a facebook page.  my neighborhood has a facebook page.

each organization uses its FB page as a vehicle to communicate with its “members” and advertise to non-members.

i check these various FB groups often because people, some that i know and some that i don’t, are involved in an activity that i enjoy.  i benefit from seeing what they do, how they do it, what gear they use, what trouble they got into and how they got out of it.  i learn about how to participate in “events” and activities.  i ask questions when i am looking for information and offer guidance when i think it could be helpful.

posting photos allows me to see the faces of people i otherwise might never get to see.

when i am lonely, i can engage in a conversation (or multiple conversations) with people from all over the world.  in many ways, FB is similar to HAM radio (I am KE7QZM), in that i get to communicate with people, often who i have never met, who enjoy an activity that i enjoy.

i very much like our email list and don’t really want it to go away, but it is mostly antiquated when compared to FB.

i vote that we give it a try.
