Hi All,
Why does my 1999 Catalina 36 MK II have two shore power inlets? I've only ever used one of them...I do have
air conditioning. I'm just curious about the design intent.
Thanks in advance,
John

Our's also has two shore power hookups. One is dedicated to the AC. The other covers all the other AC power requirements. If you ran everything through a single hookup, there would be too much current draw.

Well I considered that as a rational, but then I've never had a breaker go when using AC and also if your explanation is correct, then you would need to have separate breakers for those two inlets. My boat has one located under the starboard side rear coaming and of course one at the control panel. There's not a separate breaker for each of them.
Interesting.
Now that I'm thinking about this, we have a switch (inclusive of breaker???) for each of the shore power receptacles mounted on the transom. These are located in the starboard locker. There is also a single AC power switch on the face of the electrical pannel in the cabin. Adjacent this is a switch to verify shore power polarity. Behind the cabin panel, when it is folded down, there is a dedicated circuit breaker for the AC.
We are the second owners of our boat. I believe the original owner may have had the dealer install a second circuit when AC was added.

Yes, well that all makes sense on your boat. As I said, I only have the one set of breakers on the same circuit. I'm the third owner of the boat so I don't know if I have "factory" air or not. If it was installed after original build, then they were not as conscientious as your original owners about circuit overload integrity. But still, the question remains...what is the purpose of two shore power hookups if they're on the same breaker.
We have 2 shore power plugs, original one at the transom and one in the anchor locker. The purpose is to avoid running the cord all along the boat if you are bow in at the slip. There is also a switch at the panel to go for one or another. We also have an AC and after 20 years later we have never had an issue with the AC running.

I'd love to have that arrangement. I'm bow to in my slip and I need 60 ft of cable to reach my stern. Your system is on my near wish list.
