Mk1 Battery Compartment

On my Mk1 C36 (1987), the aft battery compartment (just forward of the nav desk) has this big hunk of metal glued/epoxied/5200'd (not sure) in presumably to wedge the battery tray in place. Does anyone else's boat have the same thing. I believe it is some type of metal, painted, and I can't drill into it with a regular drill bit, at least not easily.

Anyone have knowledge on it?

A. If I want to mount something to it (battery monitor, shunt, etc), is it safe to use some more aggressive means to drill into it, or should I epoxy a piece of wood to it first?

B. Eventually I could see myself wanting to eliminate it in order to accomadate more batteries, as I have seen others fit 3 or 4 batteries into this compartment.

Thanks

Not sure what it is. I suspect it is additional weight to help balance the boat in the water. I had a list which went away when I put 5 batteries on the starboard side 4 6V and 1 12V about 240 LBS

Lead block to help correct the list to port.  Should be possible to pry loose with a crowbar on flat piece of metal to distribute the pressure of the crowbar against the hull.  If 5200 was used you might have the paint on the hull come off, but I suspect it might be easier to remove than you think (might actually NOT be glued) as the sheer weight of it might make it feel like it is glued down.  I opened a hole under the bottom drawer of the starboard side set and shoved a bunch of flat lead pieces under where the nav chair is mounted.  This accomplished the list correction.

Interesting.  Our boat didn't have that when we bought it, nor the internal battery box within that compartment.  I suspect it was torn out by a prior owner if it was a factory item.   Have not noticed a list to port, however, despite its absence...(2 GC 6V batteries and one group 27 battery in the compartment).
