Lose Spreader

On my 1994 C36 MKII my starboard spreader has some play (is lose) when I pull back and forth on the upper shroud that runs through the spreader, I can see a gap between the spreader and mast when I pull the shroud toward the bow. The gap goes away if I don't shake the shroud, but it is definitely lose. My port spreader is ok with no gap and no play. Any had this issue before? Thanks

I have a simular gap under the starboard spreader as well, although maybe not quite as pronounced. It concerned me initially upon taking ownership 10 years ago but it hasn't caused any issues so far. Cant say I've tried shaking the shroud to see if it moves though.

My guess is the clevis pins are not the correct size.  If the clevis pin is too small it will allow the spreader to move around.  You need to replace with the largest size clevis pin that will fit in the hole.  Also replace the washer that fits the larger clevis pin.  Fortunately, the spreader is in compression when under sail, and this condition should not cause any problems.  But it would make me very nervous.

Replace with the correct size clevis pin and washer, then wrap with rigging tape.

Thank you. I'll check the pins to make are the right size. The base doesn't seem to have ant play in it so it may well be the pins. I have a rig inspection coming up soon so I hope is just something like the pins. Appreciate the help
