MKII Traveler Track Removal

Anybody out there ever removed their traveler track on a MKII? If so, any hints, special tools, etc?

Thanks Pat. I also have a slight leak around the one of the capnuts. Not a drip, but a bit of discoloration indicative of a future issue. Might be just the end bolt, but could also be wet coring from nearby bolts that tap into the imbedded plates.

I'm going to pry mine off in the next few weeks, dry out any wet coring, and rebed with butyl tape. Best guess is that water is entering at the sheaves and running down the bolts. My thoughts on sealing would be aggressively bevel each bolt hole and apply butyl tape to the underside of the deck organizers, the bolts where they protrude from the deck organizers, and around the bevels. So, when it's all tightened up the butyl will hopefully form an o-ring around each bolt.

I was not planning on upgrading the sheaves, but certainly giving them a warm-water soak and a bit of silicon spray.
Nick,
Now my turn for questions. This deck organizers seem kind of cheap. The housing is made from some sort of formed metal. The sheaves are bushing type, not ball bearing. Just wondered if anyone has ever upgraded the deck organizers under the traveler?

I upgraded the existing organizers this winter with replacement ball bearing sheaves from Catalina Direct (www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm/product/372_414/ball-bearing-sheaves-fo...); they seem to have made a significant difference (I also relocated them aftward so as to make the turning angle more obtuse). These appear to be made by Garhauer, although I don't see them on the latter's online catalog.

Nick,

How was your experience removing the traveler and re-sealing? Do you have any tips?  Did you find much core damage? I have had a small drip above the galley from the capnut below the traveler that is discolored. Now I also have a small drip on the other capnut near the nav station. This drip is clear.

Thanks,

I know Butyl is a favorite, but for holes, I coat the bolts or screws with Polysulfide cauking before inserting. The caulk adheres to the hole cavity  and seals the core, in addition to the underside of the bolt head. Messy to use, but the overfill cleans up nicely by just wiping and I've never had a need to reseal.
