Replacement Mast Questions

Hi All,

This is my first post so please go easy on me :D
I am fortunate enought to have just become an owner of a Catalina 36 MK2 which is a dream come true.
Unfortunately at one point in its life it has had an incident which resulted in the mast being removed and unrecoverable.
I have found another mast which i am told will fit and the previouse owner of the boat has measured however i would just like to see if anyone on here is able to confirm or knows of any reason i should not go with this particular mast.

The details of the new (second hand) mast are below:

This mast has just been removed from a Swan 36.
Keel stepped double spreader rig.
Selden mast section E177
177mm x 124mm cross section.
0-deck  2.15m
0-vang attachment point 2.35m
0- gooseneck 2.95m
0-1st spreader 6.22m
0-2nd spreader 10.41m
0-top of the mast 14.60m

  I  13.07 m
 J  4.17 m
 P  11.6 m
 E   3.99 m

i am completely new to this so please let me know if you need any more info.
Many thanks

I don't have an answer for you at the moment -- not close to the boat at present, otherwise I'd take some measurements for you.   But at the risk of being seen as an imperial measure chauvenist, however, I'd offer the suggestion that you might want to consider editing your post to also include the measurements in feet and inches.
I sat this only because my sense is that the great majority of users on this site reside in one of the three remaining nations that (for some inane reason) have yet to adopt the metric system (Myanmar and Liberia being two of them).  So they don't "think" metric, probably don't have metric tape measures on their boats, and may be less likely to get out their calculaters and do the conversions to imperial measure in order to help you out.
(And yes, perhaps those of us in imperial measurement folks could return the courtesy and post in metric as well!)
Regards -- and welcome to the C36IA!

You rig would be a bit short. Here is the measurements from sailboatdata.com I also believe that the 36 was a single spreader rig suggesting that your mast section may be more bendy than the stick Catalina provided.

Hi,
thanks for your replies,
it looks like i will keep on looking for a replacement mast. I would like it as original as possible so this one will not work out.

thanks

And, per Sailboatdata.com, the measurements for the tall rig option are: I: 46.75'/14.25m J: 14.33'/4.37m P: 41.00'/12.50m E: 13.00'/3.96m Sail Area (100%): 601.46 ft2/55.88 m2

Russ,

I think in this case you are making the correct conclusion, that this mast is not the right choice.  But you need to consider other aspects of the mast other than dimensions.  First :  The mast section must fit the " shoe " ( What the base of the mast sets in ).  Second :  You need to consider the shrouds, their number and their length.  The Catalina 36 has a single spreader with One (1) upper shroud, and Two (2) lower shrouds, forward and aft [ Connecting to Three (3) chainplates ].  The double spreader mast would have One (1) lower, One (1) intermediate, and One (1) upper, all connecting to a single point ( chainplate ).  I don't think that would work well on a Catalina 36.  It would require fabricating a bracket to attech all three (3) shrouds to a single hole chainplate.  Not sure I would be happy with all that load going to a single chainplate. The length of these shrouds could be an entirely different problem

Russ have you tried consulting with a RELIABLE rigger?   You might give that a shot.

Since you're already going through the expense, everyone I've spoke when that had in-mast furling absolutely loved it. Might be something to consider since you're already getting raked over the coals.

Russ, in 2008 I removed my std mast and bought a new furling mast. I did the complete re Rigging job with assistance from Colin Mack at Mack sails and Rigging. My mast is to my knowledge the only double spreader 36 in the world. I made the mast height exactly the same as my old one, and went with Mack’s and z spars extrusion recommendations . It is much lighter than the Oem rig since double spreader vs the telephone extrusion CY provided. Actually I have the same extrusion as a Beneteau 423 so it’s beefy but still 150 Lbs lighter. Biggest job was installing new mast base and making it fit on keel, and obviously cutting all the standing Rigging. Because our boats were not setup for DS rig the D2’s have to be adjusted from a bosuns chair, a pain but very doable especially if pro rigger does it.  Since I did mine I have sold a half dozen re rigs for people converting to furling rigs.  I always say, you better LOVE YOUR BOAT since it’s about the same price as selling it and buying another used boat with rig you want if not in love with your existing boat.  But with that said, if you love your boat and handy it can be done reasonably easy. In my case, our boat was setup the way we wanted it and loved our boat (1995 #1474) and it made good sense plus reasonably done after selling my old rig. If you would like to discuss I may be able to give you some insight. Email me off line at chiclasser1@yahoo.com
