My older 25 hp has a new drip where the shift lever enters the marine gear. Nice clean red ATF fluid I guess there is a seal there that has given up. Do I need to remove the gear(remove shaft coupling, unbolt tranny from motor) to change the seal? Just looking at it makes me think that yes I need to pull it out. Damn.Anyone done this?

If yours is an HBW100 you can just remove the cover over the shift shaft, as I recall there's 4 bolts holding it on. Then take the shift end off and it pulls out. Carefully. There is an o-ring on that shaft, that's probably what's leaking.
However, don't count on it, I changed my o-ring and it still leaks a drop now and then. I took it apart again and looked really close and I think the shaft itself is the problem from the marks on it. Given the cost of the shaft, I chose to just put a Pampers down there to catch the drip or two a day that gets out.
Is your transmission fluid level proper? I've heard of skippers who fill it up during the winter, as recommended, but forget to reduce the level to operating level when starting the new season. Wouldn't think that would apply to you, though.

Stu, I do fill 'er up in the fall and I do suck it back out to the correct level in spring. Just did that last Thursday. The leak is miniscule, not even enough over our normal 75 hours of engine use a year to require adding any fluid. But over the winter with high oil level it is much worse, it will saturate the Pampers I put in there for summer, requiring a diaper change each spring. Unless it gets a lot worse, I'm going to stick with the yearly diaper change solution.
Yes I see the 4 bolts for the plate that covers the shift lever...I will attempt removal when things slow down in July..meanwhile it drips only when running so I will keep an eye on it for now ...hopefully the o ring is standard and solves it. Thanks for your responses,I will let you know what happens
